This is my full motion simulator that I recently converted it to car racing simulator with the use of x-sim software.

EDIT: ---UPDATES from my last participation on Athens Digital Week robotics show---

In the videos I used LiveForSpeed which is one of the best car racing simulation game.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Quuqhjnxwq4

Its based on the old joyrider design but I motorized it with the use of car windshield wiper motors.

On earlier videos I used a Basic Stamp2 microcontroler to read the data from the USO interface of the x-sim. And the motors were driven with the use of Parallax's HB-25 motor controllers that converts the wiper motors to big servos! But now I moved on to the advanced motion control methods with DIY motion controller interface AMC1.5 and my own DIY h-bridge motior controller DSMhb1.2b. See more info about it here:

    Hey Thanos

Congrats! The movements seem quite perfect!

It should be noticed, that the entire construction is made without soldering. All parts could be purchased via the local DIY store. And the racing seat is a really great inmprovement!

BTW: The music track in the third vid is my favourite ;)

    @ Sinoname

Yes the gear effect isn't notisable in video but its there. You can feel the small vibration during the shift changes. It is more notiseable on slower cars that take more time to shift...!

Another thing is that I filtered the sudden moves to the half (using the smooth sliders) to avoid braking apart the motors! It needs more tweaking in both x-sim software and inside the microcontroller code to find the best conbination of safety and speed. After all the motors behave as really big servos they just follow the position point that x-sim instructs. No washout is implemented at all!!!

I will post complete plans of the motion cockpit soon on http://www.etherealsounds.com/

Yesterday a friend made a visit and tryied my motion simulator. So I took the opportunity to make some new videos with a closer look into the mechanics while they operate!!

[EDIT: There is a lag noticable in the following two videos, that have been caused due to Profiler1 issues, which have been sorted out now]

Thats really great. The movement looks very acurat and precisly...and fast!!!

As longer as i a watch your movie, i like the construction of your frame more and more, although it does not fit in every livingroom due to the size of it.

your interface works very well...nice work!!!

    Hi Thanos,

your LFS profil is getting better and better. Especially, the perfect bump effect ,at second 12 of the movie, when the other car hits yours, and the simulator moves to the left and right, i like very much.

Do you have some ideas how to integrate ground waves into the movement of your simulator concept?

Do you think, it would be possible to overlay the continous movement of the whipermotors with a fast sinus vibration, for - and backwards, to simulate that kind of ground waves?

    kind regards
    René

The bump effect on the 12second was came from the computer directly from the acceleration data that was big enouph to make the move you see.

I have something in mind that involves filtering of the low frequency PWM signals sended to the motors (by limiting the lower range of the servo pulses that are weak to move the motor).

But then it might loose some of its smoothness... More experimenting on this will show if its possible.

Again for ground effects as bumps I could inserted this wave effects in the existing axis by reading the data from the z acceleration direction. But since current version of x-sim doesn't support support yet exporting of more axis, this is just impossible...

    Hi Thanos,

very impressive and welldone documentation. I especially like the highres pictures. I have only one suggest, i would be good to see on the first page a short description for the control software you use for your simulator. Just like as:

    PVC part construction photos: PVCpart.htm

    wiper motors pulley assembly: wiper_motors_pulley.htm

    Bank motor mount: bank_motor_mount.htm

    Pitch motor mount: Pitch_motor_mount.htm

    LCD display mount: LCD_mount.htm

    Bucket seat mount: bucket_mount.htm

    Interface electronics: Electronics.htm

    Control software: software.html

Now, the next step could be a mixture between your simulator and the frexdesign ;-) But before that, we all waiting impatiently for your new powerfull interface.

    kind regards
    René

Yes, I know I must add lot of things and among them a page dedicated to the motion softwares. The links page need more details too!

But I must go on with the new avr controller for now. I implemented the basic PWM routines and now going into more advace territories like position feedback and proportional control...

    Hi,

I added software description page on my site. It needs more work, and some examples of interfacing that will be added when I find some free time.

And added a page dedicaded to the hardware upgrades (new belts etc).

    See you, Thanos

    Hi Thanos,

yes, it is a lot of work to write good project documentations, nearly same as developing it :)

Good to see, that x-sim software is on your page.

I hope it becomes not too much work for you, to care all the documentations and content on so many different sites

If you want to publish your work at the main site of x-sim, please let us know, and we could offer a hardware project section. We use a content management system, which is easily customizable.

    @Thanos

Could you please tell us what for a diameter the wheel has, which is connected to the wiper motors?

Tobi is searching for something similar.

Its 12cm in diameter and cast iron painted white that means I spend almost an half hour to drill the five holes on it!

I'll find in my file some links and info I had on them and post it tommorow!
