    Welcome @Tonys89.

Have a look at existing member 6DOF builds, that may help you refine your own project ideas: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/6dof.22/category

You will find plenty to get you started in the FAQs: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

You can even build your own DIY actuators: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/diy-linear-actuators.248/

We have a glossary for all those acronyms we tend to use, which will help you decipher some descriptions: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

Feel free to ask questions on your build thread, the members here give freely of both their time and expertise.

Hello everyone, as my avatar said, my name is Pierre Lalancette. I am from Quebec, the French province of Canada.

I work in 3D as a technical Artist. I used to be an electronic technicien a long time ago.

I just bought myself a Vive and I want to expand the experience with a simulator.

I am looking to build a 6DOF, more out of necessity than DIY satisfaction. My electronic is a bit rusted. My manual abilities a more than below average (so say my brother all the time). But the cost of a real 6DOF is prohibitif and I still want one. I have no idea how to pull it off when someone pointed me to this forum. I just read the 36 pages of the incredible build of "SilentChill" and I want more. More info, more possibilities, more things that keeps me awake at night, when I should be sleeping, but day dreaming.

I have some ideas how to do it. I have no idea where I'll get the money for the parts and how to assemble them properly. To tell you the true, I don't really care. I'll find a way.

I have ordered 6 RB-Soy-03 12V 0.4A 36oz-in Unipolar Stepper and some ULN2803A to start testing at a smaller scale and build the necessaire knowledge to get this done, using my last visible money in my big empty bank account. Already, my stepper motors are back order. The first catastrophe of a long series of apocalypses that await me all along the way.

When I'll feel ready, I'll start my own thread about this. For now, I just want to thank you all for existing.

It's great that you are keen, but you may have saved yourself some money/time/hair in starting a build thread sooner. Really recommend you read the FAQ. Eg. In the FAQ there is information on building a test model using RC servos - https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/how-to-drive-rc-servo-with-arduino-and-simtools.30/ this setup is cheaper/simpler and there is existing software available to interface and run them from Simtools.

Hi everyone, been checking out this forum every now and then for the past months but maybe the time has come to properly introduce myself. My name is Remco and I live in the Netherlands. During the week I'm a system/network administrator and whenever I'm off I'm quite into gaming, DIY, r/c racing, growing my own food and spending time with the family. Since I bought myself an Oculus I've gotten a lot into sim-racing and after creating wind-effects I wanted more. Recently added a tactile transducer and even though the effect is nice, it's not enough! By sheer coincidence I saw SilentChill's vids on his motion rig and got interested. My main problem is that I don't (yet) have the room to build (and use) a proper motion sim. So for the time being I'm going to build a small scale version (thanks for pointing out that FAQ SeatTime, hadn't checked it out yet!). I've always been interested in electronics but I think it would be wise for me to get a book on that subject matter. One good thing is that within my family I can find enough people that can help me out with certain things (car mechanics, welders, etc).
Nice to join this awesome community and hopefully one day will be able to start my own DIY project thread!

    Welcome @Roxsman.

Building a model is a great way to start: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/build-a-working-model-to-test-your-design-ideas.216/

You can also browse the existing member threads for ideas, including compact sins that take little room in building or use: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

My compact 3DOF rig is only 500mmx500mm, so about the size of an average office chair. At the other end of the scale you have the 6DOF and flat bed simulators, that take a fair amount of space. So take your time working out what suits you, a few months planning is time well spent, and the community here can help you out as you formulate your ideas about what you want to build.

    Good luck with your project.

    Hi guys,

French newcomer... I discovered the forum 'cause I'm considering to build a racing simulator dedicated to cars driving. Don't know yet how many DOF I'll use but I'm going to make up my mind here :)

I used to do machining (CNC and others) and I'm now designing structural and mechanical stuffs so this part of the engineering won't be an issue for me. The trickiest part will be the elctronic for me.

    Let's see... :)

Found this site after looking for software to operate a simulator I am designing and fabricating that is 2dof with RTL. Looking forward to learning as much as I can here.

I don't want to play the smart a$$, but I am not allowed to start any thread yet. I went for the stepper motor because I was told by SilentChill that actuators was the way to go (someone told him that ;)). I saw the RC model (yes, I did look at some of the FAQ. Not all, but some.) but didn't feel that it would make good scaled down actuator. I know little about big motors, but I saw some examples with the 1.8 degree step, and that is the same as my small motors.
If you think I am going the wrong way, my motors are still back order. I could probably change them. What do you recommend?

You can start a new thread @Pierre Lalancette, but you need 5 posts prior to being able to post links on it: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...ed-posts-needed-before-links-can-be-used.150/

I think what @SeatTime means is that in terms of testing design ideas and becoming familiar with SimTools then an RC model is a cheap way to do so, with code already available: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/build-a-working-model-to-test-your-design-ideas.216/

So if that is what you are trying to do then go with the RC model, if not then start your own thread here and explain a little more and members can then give advice: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

Perhaps @hooshang's 6DOF model is closer to what you have in mind: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/6dof-platform-with-small-dc-motors.5634/

Silentchills, mine and Wannabeeflyers DIY actuators all use brushed DC motors, not steppers.
