Theres a lot of reason behind motion sickness an dhow it affects people as cthggin points out.
its going to vary from person to person.
My 10 year old son gets a bit off from being a passenger in the car after about 20-30 mins, but he can motion sim race for over 2 hours without a problem.

Very experienced race drivers are too sensitive to the motion forces.This sensitivity keeps them in front.
Anything produce problems in their motion-feeling, is problem to the simulation model.(that we produce)
Many times motion sickness presence only by vision difference to the reality.(so sensitive!!!)
Our (Sim-funs) brain, accepts our simulators motion models and after a few hours compromise to that.
This is good for us for the grate fun from our simulators.But very bad for racers that use every piece of their brain to go faster.

Last month I was in Dubai and visiting Abu Dhabi, on my return I also visited Ferrari World and tried their 6DOF simulator, not the 2 big ones with real cars, but the smaller ones. There were 8 of them and people were competition, I was so eager to try one of those 6DOFs to see what's the feeling. It was a triple screen setup on them, some unknown in bad condition pedals and a Cruden wheel base with Momo rim.

The FOV of the screens were so wrongly setup and the motion profile was a bit off, when race has started I received such headache that I thought my head will explode. It took me few corners until I got used to it, the other guys were so off the track that I've finished first at the end leaving all other people like half of circuit gap, I've set the best lap time of the day

But I've felt that headache and sickness later on, the point is - bad setup can get you motion sickness, that is for sure, I've felt it on my own..

Some additional thoughts on sickness.

I used to work in the flight simulation industry on full cockpit simulators sitting on 6DOF motion platforms. They were Army helicopter simulators. If a real Army pilot came out of the simulator feeling sick then we had done something wrong. I have about 100 hours in one of the simulators.

Twice I have been on big simulator rides at amusement parks. I cannot stand them. The motion is so disconnected from the visual it messes up my head real bad. I have to close my eyes and hang on until the "ride" is over.

Many years ago I also used to drive a race car so I have some knowledge as a driver. I recently had the opportunity to do a couple of sessions in a race car simulator a local guy has set up as a professional business. He uses high end gear you would see on YouTube -- iRacing, VR headset, motion seat, direct drive steering, etc. His Oculus Rift DK2 setup, and HTC Vive setup both made my head hurt. When I went back he had an Oculus Rift CV1 and had hired a motion researcher to set it up. I had absolutely no motion problems with it.

Sickness of this type can be caused by your brain not being happy that what you are seeing and what your body is feeling are not matched up.

There are days when I get a bit sick specially when playing VR, but not so much when playing VR with (2dof) motion

I've had many friends test my 3DOF with Oculus CV1 setup and the only thing that has caused them very bad motion sickness is drifting. If they drive F1/GT or anything in a straight line there is very rarely any motion sickness but as soon they tried drifting for about 10 minutes they were sick for over 30 minutes. I contribute this to the constant spinning out they were doing whilst drifting and not looking out the door windows during drifting or a spin (many new VR users don't look into the corners like you're supposed to). I can drift for hours in VR without any issues and I can't be sure if that's because I'm used to VR or I'm looking where the car is headed even during a spin. It could also be because I don't spinout anywhere near as much as my friends do being more used to the cars and hardware. I've put a ban on my friends drifting unless they push the point and accept the consequences.

I think that not looking into the right direction and constantly spinning out are the leading causes. As much as I'd like to confirm that's what's causing their motion sickness those guys won't be giving it a second chance lol

I had this in the dive game with Oculus rift 4 month ago ... Play it for 20 min ...had a really hard night.

Other things like 3D shooter oder flying sim, or car ...no problem.

Never play the dive sim again ( and i fly in real nearly everything in the air + aerobatics )

The solution to motion sickness is the same as sea sickness. Focus your eyes on the horizon and your brain will interpret the movements you are feeling and you will feel better.

Do any driving simulators have a horizon in the background ?
