    Welcome @carter59.

DC wormdrive motors and actuators are both well proven approaches, though the DC route is often significantly cheaper and they are quieter than commercial actuators. But members are now DIY building actuators rather than buying expensive commercial offerings: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/diy-linear-actuators.248/

Have a look at existing member builds, that may help you refine your own project ideas: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

You will find plenty to get you started in the FAQs, from design software, dimension of sims, to PSUs, pots, motors, JRKs, Arduino code and Motor Monsters, plus heaps more: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

We have a glossary for all those acronyms we tend to use, which will help you decipher some descriptions: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

    Hello All,
Long time reader, first time poster

I'm finally jumping in on a seat shaker upgrade for my existing simulator and I know all the members here will help me be successful.

A little background on me, I'm an engineer in the USA and I have had a working racing rig for about a year now. I always plan on doing Iracing or dirt rally, but I think I enjoy designing and building more then actually using my rig. I started with a full pvc setup and quickly moved to a 80/20 aluminum rig. I have some designs on GrabCAD (Search for Extruded Aluminum Sim Racing Cockpit) and I will be updating the rig there as I go.

    Currently I am running
Amall MIGE OSW with Fanatec BMW rim and accuforce QD
    Fanatec CS3 pedals
    Fanatec Shifter
    Fanatec E-Brake
    Tripple 28" monitors
    I7 PC with GTX1080
4x Aurora Shakers one on each corner.
Oculus Rift CV1 (Some people cant handle the rift so I like to keep the rig setup for both, But I love the rift)

Parts I Have already sourced for my upgrade
2x 50:1 motors from PWSAW on ebay
    2x 600W server power supplies
6 point cheap racing harness from ebay
double flange u-joint for the chair
misc hardware, rod ends and rods
    saber-tooth 2 x 32A
    multiple arduino micro-controllers
    potentiometers
2x Marine Fans for simulated wind
4x dayton shakers for seat, pedals and shifter

I design everything in CAD and usually have a fully assembled model before beginning to build the real thing.
some challenges that I see ahead are
software configuration with all of my software playing together (Fanaleds, EKSimManager, simtools, SimVibe, OSW etc.)
Power Draw, I would like to keep my system to a household outlet (15A at 120V in my case)
establishing the correct angles for the chair motion
cramming all of the components into my extremely compact rig

anyhow I will probably start a build thread eventually and post some updates, although it wont be as complete as Nick Moxley's 2dof to 3dof thread (good stuff).

happy to be apart of the community and cant wait to see all the new projects

    Hello,
This is my first post. I am a newbie, just completed 2 DOF build utilizing SCN5 100mm, Universal seat motion kit and 8020 profiles. Have not fired it up using any game yet as I am still looking for more info on setting up the Axis properly. Both actuators are fine in testing. Now where do I go about finding more info. Any tips on setting Axisfor my setup? Please point me in the right direction.

    Regards

    Welcome @Notre.

Nice timing, SimTools 2.1 has just been released and in demo mode has the Live For Speed plugin already installed for testing purposes: https://www.xsimulator.net/simtools-motion-simulator-software/

SimTools 2.1 can be obtained free for DIY builders, but be aware specific conditions apply and that there are some slight configuration differences from the earlier version: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/request-a-free-diy-simtools-2-0-license.262/

    Hi,
I am new to this site and very enthusiastic about building a 2DOF flight simulator.
They will use 'Arduino with 2dof. Now I will experiment with small servomotors.
Then I build the real simulator.
    Hi everyone.

    Hi
I'm Tom and I'm from cold Switzerland :)
I built a lot of electronics projects in the past and dreamed a few days ago from a sim and found this project the next day :D.
As I'm bringing in experience in electronics, I decided to build a 2DOF seat myself.
Until now, I built up a "demo" model with Lego and an Arduino and two servos, which is working like a charm. This is thought for learning purposes. As I work as a programmer, I thought about creating my own plugins.

Next steps: buy 2 wipermotors for the next experiments :)

    Greetings
    Tom

    Hi to all existing members!

My name is Alan, aka RandomCoder. I have +20 years experience in engineering with a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. I specialise in machine automation. Anything to do with Distrbuted Control Systems (DCS), PLC's, industrial robotics and machine vision interests me. I'm very fortunate in that my work is as much a hobby as it is a full time job.

To relax from a busy day at work I chill-out with a games like Project Cars or Dirt Rally. Last year I built myself my first water cooled PC and have been really happy with the results. This year it was my 40th and I treated myself to a force feedback wheel and pedal set. It's only a Logitech G920 but I'm happy with the added level of immersion. Being married with three kids and two dogs I have a budget to work too!

Whilst researching the wheel I stumbled upon XSimulator, and now that I have found that it is possible to extract game telemetry I'm eager to build a simulator!!!

I've spent most evening for the past couple of weeks reading through posts and finally decided to sign up and get started. Still not sure exactly which way I intend to go although space is probably my biggest constraint (at least until my eldest son moves out ;)), and after that it would be cost.

So I'm thinking a 2DOF with the design intent to upgrade to 3DOF later. Although I've read a few posts about G-Seats and they sound particularly interesting. However I'm not sure I'd trust sitting in my own G-Seat for fear of broken ribs.

Well that about sums it up so hopefully I'll be posting questions and maybe even a few answers in the future.

    Thanks,
    Alan

Welcome to the world greatest simulation community :)
Just for information I'm not a native English speaker but I still survive even as a moderator. Take the chance for learning English while building a simulator. Both is worth the effort.

    Greetings everyone.

I'm an avid SimRacer, and was a early VR tester and adopter. I saw a couple videos of rigs members have built and was blown away. I've always considered myself adept at DIY stuff, but I'll admit I was a little overwhelmed upon finding this community. Are most of the people here engineers by trade or training? As someone who's purely a self-taught hobbyist, I'm wondering if I have the chops to do something like this.

Before I jump into a build and bite off more than I can chew, I was thinking I'd try and build a scale-model of a simple rig. I figure that way I can get my head wrapped around the basics. Anyone have particular advice on where to start or parts to use for something small?

    Thanks

    Welcome @Vantage9.

There are some members here with exceptional skills but most of us came to sim building just like you, having no real clue but wanting to get into motion simulation. Fortunately the members here freely share their time, advice and expertise with anyone willing to give motion simulation a go.

There is a bit to get your head around initially but it is not as complex as it first seems, there are just so many choices to make around design and parts which depend on your own goals, skills, resources and where you are in the world.

A bit of time spent planning is time well spent, and the community here can help you out as you formulate your ideas about what you want to build, which will save you time, money and frustration, so post your thoughts and kick your ideas around with the community even in the planning phase.
