200 degree rotation 2DOF DIY

    I have built a simulator very similar to this one (mine is here: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/2dof-joyrider-flight-race-sim-build.7498/). I've been surprised how little motor power I have needed. The key it to make sure you have everything balanced with the pivot points in the right spot. As you guys have already figured out, even with perfect balance you need a certain amount of power to get the rotational acceleration you want. From your pitch test it seems like your motors are strong enough, but the real test will be rapidly changing motor direction.

    This is the potentiometer setup. It is a ten turn pot hooked up so we get 200 degrees of rotation on the pitch axis.

    So over the summer I got caught up in other things, but I have begun work again and made some big progress!

    I started with making a carriage for holding the frame that I built previously:

    Testing the motors!! I have decided to forgo the potentiometers, and instead use MPU-6050 Gyroscope modules for rotation feedback. This way I can convert this into a full rotation sim in the future.

    Would not worry yet, when you mount all the computer and other systems onto the moving rig it may balance it out a bit better.

    Hey! Got it all working with my rift CV1! It feels pretty natrural!


    I'm thinking that this will be a bit better for flight sim games, but so far it works pretty well with LFS.

    Thoughts on the next game I should try??

    Looks nice guys and I see you have a cockpit under construction in the background :thumbs. Hopefully a Generic solution for VR motion cancellation can be implemented for the Rift one day :rolleyes:. I agree - that type of sim lends itself better for Flight simulation.

    Dirt rally is an awesome game but if you push too hard you'll soon find the car taking to the air.
    One of the coolest crashes I ever did was a clean barrel roll straight back onto my tyres and landed it in the middle of the track to continue the race. Can't wait to see some of your crashes :popcorn

    I'm back!
    I've decided to convert the sim to a continuous rotation platform, so I can use it with my RC airplanes.

    Started by removing those potentiometers and replacing them with rotary encoders. I am also converting each axis to battery power so I don't have to run and cables to them.

    And yes, I plan to clean up all that messy wiring. :D

    I'm planning on controlling each axis with a board hacked out of a spectrum RC transmitter that I will hook up to an Arduino up on the airplane. The Arduino will get the roll and pitch from a MPU6050 gyroscope.

    I'm following your project ... correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the pulleys together with the chains, generate a certain delay in the response of the movement ... is it within your expectations, or do you want to change something?

    Yeah. The gearboxes aren't optimal, but they seem work well for what we are doing. We really needed something that could continue to turn the simulator indefinitely and this is what I came up with at the time. I would probably do it a little differently if I were to do it over again.
