@Coop - I agree completely with @noorbeast. There won't be any practical difference between attaching a regular Vive controller to your seat vs. a Tracker. On the other hand, the Tracker can make for a very neat, clean, and hassle-free installation. You can always wait and see how much of a bother it is in practice. I don't use my controllers all that much but mounting and demounting whenever I did want to use them was enough of a consideration for me to go ahead and get a Tracker - but at the time I got the Tracker, I didn't have a 3D printer.

It should be pretty easy to mount a controller on your seat. Just a quick look through thingiverse.com and there are a bunch of holders and the controllers are ambidextrious. Fusion won't import .stl models to edit them into controller mounts but the shape of the controller is pretty basic - essentially just a section of a cone for the rounded part. You could make a mount that the controller would just drop into and that would make for really easy swapping in and out. If you have a printer, might especially wait and see how things go with the controller. Just dropping one into a mount on the back of your seat would be pretty trick and save $100. If the new Knuckles controllers interest you, that would be another reason to go with a wand-style controller mount.

And congrats on the Vive! I really enjoy mine. No problems, the tracking is solid, and for me personally, I like the bigger field of view for simming even if that means a bit more SDE. It's more of a feeling of really being there for me. I think you'll dig VR. :thumbs

Thanks, I will get the display port cable then. The deal was £50 off retail price plus £50 steam voucher (which I will use), plus Star Trek. Not amazing but like I said, it will effectively save me the £100 for the audio strap, so I'm happy with it.

Ok cool that makes sense, thanks. I like the idea of the tracker & will probably get one at some point but might as well give the controller a go first. :thumbs

Cheers for the reply, I'm really looking forward to trying it out - I haven't used any VR at all before, so I'm sure it will be much more immersive than my single screen! :)

I think the trackers look pretty cool and a bit neater, as you mentioned, so it is probably just a matter of when I decide to get one. Saving a bit of cost, with everything else I have spent out on for my motion sim setup, makes sense for now. Some of the mount designs are pretty cool & I will get one printed soon. I don't have my own 3d printer but know a couple of good places to get it done.

I'll start a thread & post some images of my rig setup, once I'm a bit closer to completing it hopefully in a few weeks. I won't clog up this thread too much more but will post some feedback specifically on the Vive once I have tested it.

    Thanks again :thumbs

    Not surprised.

It will be interesting to see what the LG HMD comes in at, that will likely be my next HMD purchase if it includes the new Lighthouse base stations, which it should, and hopefully the knuckles controllers. We already know it will have a better screen than the Rift and Vive.

@noorbeast By the time you retire you will have quite a collection of HMDs methinks.

Indeed, my first HMD was the old Vuzix 920s, which I still have and they are like new!

It looks like the OP has been discussed to death but with so little to choose overall between the Vive and Rift, I'd say the current Rift pricing makes the decision between the 2 a no brainer at the moment...

The motion cancellation software is having issues I think with the Rift while it works beautifully with Vive. For motion platforms that can be a strong motivation to go Vive. The low cost of the Rift now is definitely a draw but buyers should consider all the pros and cons for each headset.

See here re motion cancellation software: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/vr-motion-cancellation-time-to-test.10241/

@Trip Rodriguez started with a Rift and encountered some limitations when using the motion cancellation software, which utilises SteamVR: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...lation-time-to-test.10241/page-10#post-136309

And now has switched to the Vive and after sorting some interference issues has noted the benefits: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...lation-time-to-test.10241/page-10#post-136610

Others like @SilentChill are sticking with the Rift.

We know LG currently has a SteamVR HMD in development that has better screens than either the Rift or Vive, so let's hope the Rift price drop forces further pricing competition. The SteamVR knuckles controllers are already being shipped to devs and have even more finger control than Touch.

I´m on 2dof seat mover with oculus sensors fixed on my desktop. I will investigate the advantages of the cancellation of movement

This is not a "which is better post" just my .02 worth.

Just picked up a used Oculus Rift this afternoon, 200.00 USD for the touch package. One headphone does not work but I think I can repair that. It is a known issue with the ribbon cable. If I cannot I will just use my wireless headset.

The immediate difference that I found is that with the Oculus I do not need glasses or corrective lenses at all! This is astonishing as with my Vive I cannot use it at all without my glasses (I did buy the VR Lens lab lenses , my own prescription lenses work better).

The god rays are a little distracting but I believe it will be easy to get used to that.

Another thing that surprises me is that the screen door effect is not as pronounced in the Oculus as it is in my Vive.

The Oculus is also much lighter but does not fit around my face as well as the Vive does. The cushion is much thinner.

I have not yet set up room scale, I ordered another sensor and will try it out when it gets here.
