The hype train has indeed been going full tilt @SeatTime, it gives an indication of just how much existing users are so looking forward to VR upgrades.

Personally, after a little bit of a flurry in the early VR days, I decided I would not be going down any Kickstarter path again.

Probably a wise decision @noorbeast. This is only my second Kick starter backing after the upgraded 1280, but I'm old and stupid - well that's what my Wife calls me :).

Not a wise decision at all @noorbeast . If you participate, we will reach the 2000000 goal and get the wireless coupon...

I get the joke, that aside one of the Pimax concerns I have is too much feature creep tying up time and resources. And wireless is very much in that camp, very desirable but also a significant technical challenge for 8k and as yet there is not even a working prototype as far as I know.

The other for me is that VR is rapidly evolving, both technically and in a business sense, and I am interested in how a bunch of that plays out, because VR is part of what I do professionally, not just personally.

I got in because they are suppose to deliver in January, wich is not that far. Also, I have the compatible Vive assets, and this headset is lighter. Last but not least, I have tried the Vrvana and I know how fun a wide fov is. Even with the distortion, the bluriness and all, I'm sure it will be a better experience. Who knows, maybe I will have a prototype simulator 'till then... (Yeah, right!)

If you buy the basic package and don't have a base station can you use it seated? I have no interest in being able to move around and want it for racing sims.

What video card would you need for the 5K version? I can't afford a 1080Ti for 8K.

They talk about an inside out tracking. If it works well, you could live without a base station. If it's for seated position, outside in tracking needs only one base station. For the video card, I don't even know. I'm taking a chance with my 1060. It would be a good reason to upgrade...
    And spend more money.

I would bet you will need to upgrade. As is, games and sims can push a 1080Ti to its limits in VR. But it doesn’t cost anything to do the experiment. It only costs to try to preemptively fend off any issues and cards can be had in days online.

I’m really tempted by the Pimax but am going to wait as well to see what happens with HTC, LG, and Valve. I really think I have a high(er) resolution headset in my future, though. :thumbs

The way things go, I see a wireless high resolution headset in my future.

That’s just amazing to have this big of a Kickstarter. There is definitely a lot of pent up demand for high end VR.

Yes, yes, yes! They did not acknowledge it yet, but it's done! The other goal will probably be the eye tracking device.

Well I caved and threw my hat in the Pimax ring, despite my reservations about potentially too much feature creep and swearing off Kickstarter years ago.

Backers might be interested in this review: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/79208c/pimax_8k_in_amsterdam_handson_review/

Spoiler - it’s a pretty thorough review and the guy loves it. He apparently saw their most recent prototype and said they said there would be a couple more iterations before production.

My finger is so itching to click on backing. At first I thought it might be big fov and extra resolution but not well done, but it sounds like they are pulling it off. I wish I knew what/if HTC was coming out with, and what/if LG is coming out with. May just risk it with Pimax... Decisions...

With the Acer investment in Starbreeze, it looks like the industry has now really noticed ultrawide fov. But did LG and HTC believe in it enough to risk going there with the headsets they are preparing for market?

Me too. ;) I went for just the 8k headset rather than a bundle, if things don't quite pan out I don't lose as much. I plan on getting a pair of the new Vive base stations 2.0 when they come out in November and a Tracker.

Yep. Just the headset here too. Hope it was a good decision but I think ultrawide fov is really going to be a thing for driving and flying.

Had I owned the Vive I would have been in your boat too.
That 8k thingy is so tempting!
