Showroom 2/3 DOF Traction loss wiper motor DIY Motion Sim

    So, I decided to build my own motion platform after watching D MAX on you tube so all credit goes to him for the inspiration on starting this build.

    I started with an idea that I wanted to use it for my sim racing and flight sim before I started, I decided that I was going to begin simple and go for a 2 DOF and upgrade to a 3 DOF later.

    After doing a lot of research and pricing up I decided to go with Arduino and H Bridges 43A using 12V wiper motors as I felt this was the cheapest way to go and there was plenty of info and tutorials on the forum.

    Just to be clear this build could be even cheaper if you know where to go for materials as I just bought most of mine from amazon and B&Q for ease. Also, if you see anything I could improve on just let me know.



    First step for me was ordering a few parts which were.



    • 43A H bridges

    • Arduino Uno R3
    • Uno Shields (optional for ease)

    • Stand offs

    • Telephone cable

    • 12v Power supply

    • 10k Potentiometers
    • 2/3 12V wiper motors
    The schematic I followed was from the Xsimulator forum by RufusDufus (see picture and link below) and seems to work but not fully tested it yet.

    This is how it turned out for me without the motors and power supply attached. I did test it with SMC3 and it seemed to read just fine.

    started my frame by using a wheel stand that I had bought with my wheel

    and added some box section of about 1.2m in length fixing it together with M6 Bolts and nuts.

    I then made a base using the same materials and added some wheels as I wanted to be able to have traction loss later on so incorporated it into the build but not going to use it till 2DOF is working.

    I then scoured the internet to find myself a UV joint fit for my project and managed to find a MX5 prop shaft which I ended up cutting down and adding brackets.

    I then put on the top frame and found myself a racing seat and harness on the market place and made myself a makeshift seat bracket to be able to mount my seat.

    My next step is to mount up the electrics and then I want to test just having an issue with the motors as I need to isolate the grounds due to my rig being all metal so once I figure that out, I will come back and update.

    So did a bit more on the rig and corrected some of the miss takes managed to get all the electrical stuff working with SMC3 how it should just need a few mor credits to but a download pack and plugins.

    Things I have notice that need more attention:

    • Motor mount's need to be redone stronger
    • Need to figure out how to strengthen the UV joint bottom mount as it flex's a little bit.

    So to make the UVJ mount I decided to try a sleeve and got my mate welding it to a steel plate so that the UVJ can slide inside have done it so it is a super tight fit see how we get on EY.

    Quick update the above worked and is hold me fine.

    I have also now strengthend my rods and motor mounts and everything is working as it should, can't belive how much immersion it creates

    Added my seat harness to on a spring to simulate tension under braking.

    Next is a couple of shakers and I think it's done as a working model and then it's time to tidy it up electric housing etc maybe even do the 3rd axis now as the driver and pot is already done.

    Hello there!
    just curious, have you test it sitting on your rig? I think the material plate for the base is too thin, and I can see its bending. You can use aluminum extrusion like I did, and size 3030 is enough to accommodate the load of my weight.

    Yes mate it holds me but I am gonna upgrade it cause I'm not happy with it with thinker rails and plate

    Exactly as Mr. Noorbeast said.
    Also try to add 2 bolts instead of for the frame, or X brace diagonally for more rigidity.

    But I think it's a bit weak frame, as there's flexing in the middle alteady. So maybe double the sides steel profiles on top of each other.

    I have put an extra set of wheels in the middle of the frame to support the frame to prevent the flex.

    Red arrows where it's better to add a second bolt.
    Yellow is an example for the diagonal bracing.

    If you try turning the big driven wheel, does the frame rotate as you would expect it?
    I guess all those swivel wheels will affect the motion badly.

    Yes it seems too but I was considering anchoring the front on a single pivot.

    Don't think it's enough.
    You won't be able to feel small movement.

    What do you suggest then, oh and thank you for pointing out the UV joint as that would of caused me a right nightmare later am sorting that out today.

    I'm open to ideas as this is a proto type to learn from i will most likely rebuild once it works and improve on all these points you guys keep throwing at me.
