Universal Joint or CV joint for pivot?

    I was just wondering what the best way to pivot a seat was for a 2Dof seat?

    I see a lot of people use universal joints from prop shafts or similar.

    For me it's easier to get a CV joint and the end of a driveshaft than to find a universal joint.

    Is there any advantages or disadvantages to either?

    UNi joint. cv joints have twist in them standard and tend to roll different to unis

    Would a small one from a steering column do? I'd be very surprised if I managed to even break one of those.
    I have a couple of spare ones laying around.

    Hi @Barry, surely there are scrapyards where you are. I got a landrover driveshaft off ebay for £30 when I was looking. I'm sure it would have been even cheaper from a scrappy!

    Yip but that involves a trip to the scrap yard. Usually that's pretty difficult with my working hours.
    I'd like to be able to get away with using parts I have laying around the garage where I can.

    I'm also planning to use a small u-joint from steering column in my seat mover. Not sure if it's robust enough though.

    They will be fine , my first sim used a steering knuckle from a 4 cyl car. They are strong, I don't remember hearing one fail in a car, and you would think it would be punished harder on a car than a sim. I would be confident to say it will be fine.

    Cool. I have a couple of pretty sturdy ones from MK2 golfs in my garage so I'll dig them out later and have a look at them.
