This has been solved in SimTools mate we are in the process of beta testing new version of the app, for some games this means 20 dash varabile will be available to the Ard.
My first example is a Rpm Shift Light Indicator that can be custom set by button control and shift range can be tuned via a pot. I have a 16x2 shield and was going to use it to display data as an example.
Do you have a sim or in the process of building one, give SimTools a whirls much friendlier than the other software, plus we are too.

Do the dash have to be digital or can I use a regular car dash cluster

Yep we sure did, using steppers and stepper drivers, just completed another one , using a ford dash panel.

We actually had to remount the Ard and Drivers away from Steppers as noise was interfering with the precision.
So the answer is yes can be done and not too hard or expensive to complete, Sorry no more info as this is an ongoing project, but welcome to start your own.

So do you have to use stepper on each gauge ( rpm, speed ) or
do you use one stepper for all?
    sorry about newby question :)

One stepper per gauge, basically we cut out the original drive and mount a stepper within its place and glue the needle to the stepper shaft, and drive it with a pololu 10 buck driver which to keep it simple is only driven with 2 pins.

I have a board Im developing for this same process, will contain pin outs for placing an ArdUNOr3 on it and 6 stepper drivers and a 595 to drive up to 8 leds , all to save on wiring it up for newbies as this kind of mod has been asked about heaps but not simple enough for newbies to grasp.

Again if you need a hand to get this to run under SimTools , let me know mate , I do have code and info to do this simple task.
Or to be truly open, supply me with the code you have used and I can advise on how to change it.
But please use SimTools - GameDash far easier than the other system and more reliable too.
