I see, and what would be the recommended length for a full frame rig?

You can easily make a leaver adjustable with multiple holes but I would suggest starting at 40mm center to center. It does depend a bit on personal preference, motors, rig configuration, weight, proper balance.

Any of those would actually do the job.

The Ebay crabpot motors have 50:1 both of the others are 25:1. The latter two can be converted to 50 or 60:1 gearboxes if needed, but that can be a significant extra cost: http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-drive-gearbox-to-suit-industrial-motors.html

Motion Dynamics also lets you select motor/gearbox options, refer to the chart at the bottom of this page re: http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/12v-or-24v-dc-worm-drive-geared-motor-200w-22-128-rpm-15-30nm.html

What you do want to check is shipping fees as the motors are hefty little things and freight is often a make or break issue in terms of overall costs.

Would a 25:1 motor move my full frame with 90kg male and monitors no worries? @bsft did recommend 50:1 or 60:1 ones and I don't know what will work best really.

    Thanks for your replies

yes a full frame with no too heavy seat and screen static. I am 85 kg and have moved 115 kg on a full frame no problem.
If you want to move the screen with it, Id suggest 50:1 or 60:1 , so you have the torque there to do so.

Number 11 or Number 15 look both good.
Yes that drive shaft is fine .
I just go to my favourite wreck yard and ask for a tailshaft, rusty and cheap. If the unis feel ok, I buy it. Usually cost me $20 and I get 2 pivots.

Thanks. I got that drive shaft and I think im gonna go for number 11's for the motors. I know you said its best to focus on 2dof first and worry about traction loss later however I will be doing all the work around 400km away from my home and so would prefer to try do it all at once if possible. I have looked at some other traction loss jobs but I am a little confused how the uni joint moves with the traction loss? Unless it turns then wouldn't the uni joint have to move with the machine during traction loss? My thought at the moment was to have a rotational axis at the front and have a snc5 or scn6 actuator to move the rear left and right etc. How much load can a scn5 or 6 actuator handle? and how does the uni joint work when doing traction loss? or is it basically set a 3rd platform under the top 2? Also does a jrk work fine with scn5/6?

the 2 dof structure should sit on a base so it can rotate to feel the traction loss.usually to feel it better you have the rotation point near your feet. take a look at these posts from members who already have traction loss on their sim @Nick Moxley http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/2dof-to-3dof-diy-seat-mover.5271/page-14#post-61981

actually I put the rotationpoint some 30 cm from my feet forwards, I measured it at my car......but now it sure feels realistic :) the only downside of it is that my sim is a little bit long.

Thanks guys. Ive tried looking or a bearing plate or similar to do the traction loss? Anyone got a link to something which would do the job. Ive looked on ebay and trademe (nz ebay) but cant see anything too suitable. I did find something from Germany but no idea how I get it shipped to me from there. Also what do you call the arms which go between the motors and frame? Do they come in a set size or do most custom size them?

@noorbeast Thanks. Yeah I was looking at them last night actually but wasn't sure if Lazy Susan were suitable for the job. Looks like they are!

PM @Nick Moxley as I am sure he could give good advice regarding his traction loss build and experience.

Rod arms, control arms and arms have all been used interchangeably in postings, so I am not sure there is an agreed on name, but perhaps someone else can enlighten us both :think

Rod ends would be the general term, Ebay is easy to use as a reference, Most guys find/use the most commonly used term to catch as many search's as possible.
Ebay search yields 278,075 results for Rod ends

So ya i would call them rod ends.

Ok so I know this is a crude pic that I drew but my drawing skills suck and its my best effort lol however ive drawn up my current idea for the sim which will include surge and tration loss after the 2dof (is that 3 or 4 dof or still 2?) It will end up with 4 levels basically, the top level being my sim with seat, steering wheel, pedals and monitor etc attached to pivot then second level having the worm gear motors on the rear with arms up to behind seat and wheels pointing forward for surge below, third level will have actuator at the front with arm attaching to front of 2nd level and a worm gear motor at the rear which will have a arm attaching to the final 4th layer on bottom to the corner of 4th layer and having wheels sideways at the back of 3rd layer and a lazy susan bearing at the front between 3rd and 4th layer.

The traction loss would be similar to @SilentChill design as I thought it would good

I hope that kinda makes sense. I would like to hear your opinion if possible and let me know if it sounds ok or where I could/should change things up :)

@bsft a 25:1 motor should be ok for traction loss? Im thinking if my plan above is ok then either a scn5 or scn6 actuator for surge
