    I got my motors today.

It turns out the back of the gearbox is sealed so I can't mount the potentiometer to the back. I am going to swap them over for a dual shaft model so I can connect the pots up to the other shaft.

It is all good though. The supplier of the motors was really cool. He dropped them off to me this morning and I when I opened the box I saw that it had a sealed back (I couldn't see the back in any of the photos on his website) I emailed him and he said that the back of the gearbox was a oil seal so it couldn't be removed and that he was happy to swap them over to the dual shaft versions. He has already collected the old motors and will send me the new ones.

BTW if anyone in New Zealand is looking for the motors that bsft and others use then the guy who supplied my motors has heaps in stock. Saves shipping them from Australia, I couldn't really find anywhere else in New Zealand that had these motors. His website is http://www.bgts.co.nz/styled-2/styled-10/index.html

Hi Richard, found your thread finally, also found a simple damper design for you.

Hi Gilbert. I saw those dampers on the Frex website and I was thinking of doing something similar.

BTW I got that Game Stock Car brake problem sorted. It was that we didn't press the brake hard enough when we assigned it so it only used the 2nd half of the axis.

Hey guys. I have been offered some Simxperience SCN5's and I was just wanting you get your thoughts on what to expect with SCN5's vs DC Motors on my setup. I am not sure which way to go and I would like your feedback.

I think we have covered this,
DC motors with 50:1 gearbox and 65mm CTC lever and JRK should have a linear speed of 250mm to 300mm per second. 25:1 gearbox translates to 500mm per second with 65mm CTC lever.
SCN5 listed as 400 mm per second, but prone to breakage at that speed hence Bernard slows his to 200mm per second.
SCN5 moves 5kg weight safely, DC motor will move more than triple that each easy.
SCN have a small 3mm drive pin inside and can break, although a few people have managed not to break it, its expensive to fix.
Bernard I suspect will not offer warranty nor like them being used when its not his frame design or software.
There was a lengthy discussion about this on ISRTtv site a while ago. I think Thirsty was in that talk.
Simtools with work with SCN no problem, @nclabs and @yobuddy got the wiring and programming sorted for that. http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/scn5-wiring-tutorial.5566/
    Otherwise, go hard!
    Dave.

Thanks Dave. Yes, You are totally right, the SCN5's wouldn't be strong enough for my weight.

I know we talked about 25:1 vs 50:1 ratio worm drive motors but I wasn't aware of the problems with the SCN breaking drive pins and their low lifting capacity. This makes it very clear to me that if they can break under a normal persons weight then it will have no chance of handling my weight. I checked the SimXperience website and I am already 13kg over their maximum weight limit plus the extra weight of my GS-4 seat.

I didn't see that thread on ISRtv. Do you mind posting or PMing me a link so I can have a read of it. I am always keen to learn more about motion simulators and I find the expertise of everyone on this forum is priceless.

It makes me glad that I opted to go for the 50:1 worm drive instead of the 25:1. I think I am going to over engineer my build a bit so it will handle my weight better.

Back to my DC motor build. A little bit of progress.

I have been eyeing up heatsinks for the JRK's and I think I have found a couple of nice ones. I was thinking of also adding a few 12v fans for some extra cooling.

I have spoken to one of my friends who is an electrical engineer and have had heaps of experience with control circuits etc so he is going to help me with all the physical wiring (he is much better at soldering than me, even though I am a Network Engineer and am using to doing a lot of wiring)

I have talked to the my fabricators about the frame etc and I have a pretty good idea of what the plan will be.

I do have one other question, with the shoulder width. How wide should I make the top of the seat frame, where the top of the arms mount to?

    Thanks for your help.

allow 15 deg minimum angle between shoulders and where the motors connect down is the best.
for sure put a cooling fan on top of the jrks
I cannot find the link, but look under Thirstys posts. Its there somewhere

I was planning to do around 10 degrees out and 30 back but I don't know how far apart I should make the shoulder mounts. Just as wide as the seat? Or narrower so I can get the motors closer together? Then I can work out how far out the motors need to be.

This is where I was thinking of mounting the top of the arms (The red line) Once I have that then I will start drawing up some plans.

that will do. My shoulder bar is 420mm wide and its 800mm spacing at the bottom. Not sure how far back from pivot, its about 20 deg angle I think.

IF you plan to run one of these, Do NOT use a USB extension, Go for a longer VGA instead.

@Avenga76 , I think I may have asked this, what is the dash display program you use on the screen above your main game screens please?

Yes, all 4 monitors are hooked up to a single PC.

This photos was taken when I had my old GTX 680 and it natively supports 4 monitors.

I have since upgraded to a GTX 980 and it also supports 4 monitors.

They are 2xDVI, 1xHDMI and 1xDP using a passive adapter.

The dash display program on the top screen is Sim Commander 4.

Also guys. I have finished my 2 DOF build with a lot of help from @Nick Moxley

I will update my thread with more photos and how I built everything soon but here are some teaser shots

It would be great to see your new motion system in a video when you get the chance @Avenga76, great job on the build :thumbs

Thanks. The springs are for my seat belt tensioner. I am just waiting on the belts. On of my friends has an expired set from his race car which he is going to give to me.

Thanks. I will do a video soon, just need to finish off a few things.

Okay so starting from the start. This goes back a few months now.

First think I did was split my rig in half so I could keep racing while I was building my 2 DOF seat mover.

The front half can be stand alone so I could just wheel my office chair up and race. This was really hard to get used to racing without the GS-4, I really sucked at racing without it.

The back half ready to get stripped down for the 2 DOF build
