    WORM MOTORS ARRIVED!!!

Not that exciting as I can't actually do anything with them yet. :(

Waiting on the JRK's and other parts to arrive. :)

Trust me, use the time for detailed planning, there will be a dozen things you have not thought of yet or will likely change your mind about...and it keeps the enthusiasm up while making the wait go quicker ;)

Indeed @noorbeast - In fact one question I do have is the use of POTS. I know Mutli-turn is the go, but do you (anyone) have a recommended POT you use. Your "go to" pot.

I read a lot of posts last night about standard vs Hall Effect and it was pretty much 50/50. I would like to get good resolution though. Suggestions?

    Thank you.

Sorry to be a pain @noorbeast - Do you have a photo of how you mount them to you motors? I read they don't like direct connect to the motors and need a flex coupler to prolong life ?!

    Sure.

On the solid shaft gearboxes I drilled and tapped an M8 hole, made a screw in shaft from an M8 bolt, then used a flexible coupling to attach it to the pot, which is held by a light aluminium bracket.

I drilled some locating holes for the flexible coupling grub screws after I had done the initial set up and testing, as I can't move the 60:1 lever by hand and instead loosened the flexible coupling to do the calibration of the JRKs. So the grub screw holes were drilled once I knew the final position.

Finally got a Universal Joint from a Ford Falcon this week and a racing seat so I'm ready to start measuring up and working stuff out around the seat.

I've done a complete 180 these past few days while designing my frame for a foot mounted mover... While I like what I was going for, after seeing what most people are building (ie seat movers), I've decided to go down the seat mover path but with a removable foot plate and wheel holder for the "Full motion" side. Thanks again @bsft and @eaorobbie for the invaluable guidance!

I feel this give me the most options to "add on" stuff later, and with the foot extension, best of both worlds.

    Quick question around this...

Do you need to find COG with a seat mover or just mount the UJ centrally under the seat?
I assume that with making a foot pedal extension, better to balance with that in place (plus pedals and wheel etc) and then mount the UJ based on that COG?

Hoping to start building a frame this weekend. (weather permitting!)

You need to find the COG by putting the frame, yourself, controls and anything else that makes up the sim on something round, like a metal tube or broom handle and have a mate roll you back and forward until you determine the COG.

A foot pedal extension will affect where the COG, so keep that in mind for its design and determining the COG. I have an adjustable post to compensate between different controller modes, as the difference in COG is significant: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/dx-racer-compact-simulator.5866/page-8#post-67648

Thanks @noorbeast - yeah I had the way to find cog from your previous post so that's cool. I guess what I was thinking was that with the leg extension (like you said) the cog will move so if I pick a happy medium between the two then it should be sweet. I will do some design tests over the weekend. Thanks again, much appreciated.

    Do test carefully Archie.

On mine between seat shaker mode and the race setup with Fanatac wheel and pedals there is well over a 160mm difference in the COG point, and that is building the rig and foot pedal extension of aluminum, so the Fanatec gear has a big effect when it has the leverage. If you have light controllers then a happy medium would work, but with heavy gear there is likely to be strain on the motors. If you build in bias to the happy medium then do it in favor of the pedal extension.

Thank you. Yes - We are on the same track. I was going to bias the COG more towards the extension. Will keep you posted :)

Actually I just realised that you have 25:1, which will be hollow shaft, so just use a threaded rod through the shaft and appropriate flexible couplings to connect the pot to the threaded rod: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CNC-6-35...1626228033?pt=AU_Hardware&hash=item3cea236d41

On the 25:1 I used a bracket mounted to the existing spare holes are the rear of the gearbox for mounting the pots, which is easy.

Finally got some steel HS and started my build today.

I learned three things about myself today:

    1. I can't weld to save my life - however YouTube will improve that!
    2. Welded steel stays hot for a very, VERY long time.
    3. My pain threshold is very high.

    Onwards and upwards.... :grin

Started the build in earnest today after watching about 5 hours of "How to (and not to) MIG weld"

After chatting with the boy (7 year old driver wannabe) we decided on a foot motor mount sim. Yeah... Yeah.. I know, changing my mind again,
but I can't shake the design I have in my head, so I will stick with that first spark :)

Today, I welded and mounted the start of the frame to the racing seat slide rails. Tomorrow, I hope to complete the frame.

    Few pics:

    And so it begins....
    IMG_5325.JPG
    The make shift workshop...
    IMG_5327.JPG

The completed seat mount and centre frame (yes.. welded..then beat the crap out of it with a hammer to test the strength and so far so good!)

    IMG_5329.JPG

Really enjoying myself doing this... gets the old grey matter ticking over!

    Cheers,
