    I was afraid of that. I was at first encouraged by the seemingly lightweight design of some aerotrim machines, like this one: [​IMG], but there are thick (probably safer) designs too: [​IMG]. If I want THAT kind of stability, considering the added weight of the cockpit and motors, then yeah I guess need something stronger than Dexion. Thanks for pointing that out.

    Hi Barman,
    Do you know anything about metal and contructions,
    how to calculate strengh and forces and applying them into contructions?
    ( you thinking off dexion parts says enough I think)
    Why not start with a simple 2 dof platform , just to understand the forces that will surface on this relative easy project.
    I`m building one myself and I`m a mechanical engineer, wouldn`t start on a 360 degree construction for now nor in the future(don`t have the space and a willing wife :) :) .
    I`m building in such a way I can alter the contruction to a 3 dof when I have the cash for it
    Also your budget is not realistic for building a simple quality 2 dof platform, if you consider some electrics like motors ,gears plc.
    I`m building a 2 dof platform with a real cessna cockpit section total weight with the pilot(me :D ) 300 kilo
    ground frame 1600x1200mm using 50x50x5mm profiles
    crosscoupled with a T-shape frame for mounting the Cessna 1900x1200mm using 2 legs and 1 crossbeam 40x40x5mm.(giving 1600 kgs of kgF)
    using 2pcs of 1,9 kw 50hz 220volt 3ph motor connected to gearboxes I=35 ratio and frequenty inverters
    The drives will give enough force to let my cockpit travel(400mm) from one end to the other in about 0,7 second.

    Or change the direction quick enough for a simple cessna.
    It s just for the forces ,I have used such heavy materials,
    I dont want to be in the cockpit when it starts to come off the platform.
    Also you have to consider unbalanced weights

    Hi Kermit,

    I do not know anything about the metal, construction, or calculations required, which is the reason I posted my ideas here before even attempting to build anything. I've been doing a lot of reading on this since I first posted, and yeah now I can agree with most of what you said.

    However, I still believe that an aerotrim/globe type design (be it circle, square, or whatever), can achieve fast & accurate 360 degree motion fairly cheaply. My new concern is how linear motion can be incorporated into the design without upsetting the balance of the whole thing.

    Now that you said your design won't work, I would appreciate it if you followed up with here's what's wrong with it. I don't need much detail -- just point out a few flaws, and tell me what to look up & learn. You mentioned calculating strength & force, but I don't know what do with that information.

    By the way, your 2DOF/3DOF platform sounds cool, and I'll be happy to follow your progress on that if you decide to post it on the forum.

    I think what I am doing is being helpful. I am dipping you in a dose or reality. I would sugguest you start with something a little less sophisticated, expensive, large, less-tried so that you can learn.

    Do you mind if I ask your profession to better understand your skill set? Perhaps you are the man to make a simulator positioned inside a gymbal, miniturized at a consumer price.

    Super dangerous testing that without a seat and harness, but it is a good example of a DIY motion sim based on pretty typical 360 degree design.

    But it has vertical rotation rotation only on one position and all three axis doesn't move at the same time in a synchrinised movement and it looks to me that it has hydro motors instead of servo motors.

    Interesting idea, had the same thoughts about making a a sim with full 360 rotation in all 3 axes.
    only problem with it, is space, huge power bills to run motors that would allow quick rotation to mimic fast flight sim manoeuvres as well as waterproofing the design and room to hose down the sick.
    Would these need rotary encoders and other electronics, instead of pots to determine the position ?

    Wel,l let me tell you something my friend, I jus want to ride it, I don't care about the bills, it took me 10 years to figure it out how to make all axis rotate in a synchronized movement. I still have to work on a lot of issues, but it will be controlled with a joystick and I just want to ride it!!
