Unfortunately there was a spate of spam posts and the administrator @RaceRay had no choice but to put some extra measures in place for new users.

    Hello!

I'm Paul from the UK and I am just starting to look into building/buying a sim.

I currently have 2 Oculus rifts, 2 logitech wheels, 2 ex Audi TT static seats and enjoy iracing amongst other games. Iracing lets me host a head to head race when mates are over, always a lot of fun :grin

    Welcome @Paul Shortland.

There is plenty to explore here covering all aspects of DIY motion simulator building.

Check out the member builds for ideas and inspiration: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

I recommend you also browse the FAQ section, as it will give you a good idea of some of the specific areas of building a motion simulator: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

When you start formulating some questions start your own build thread and post them there, you will find the community is very active and most helpful.

Hi, I'm Bruce, from Coalville in Leicestershire. I'm looking at buying or maybe even creating my own simulator. As always my ideas are way beyond my skills. So buying might be a better/ safer option! I've seen the video of the guy playing Elite Dangerous with motion and I'm sure that is something I neeed in my life!

Does anyone know what the budget should be for a platform with say 3dof? I think I'll put my hexapod idea on the back burner for now!

Or whether the Pagnian 2dof motion platform is any good, or even compatable with simtools?
You'll have to forgive my general ignorance! It's because I'm generally ignorant and havent read everything here yet!

    Welcome @Corporatezombie.

You are in the right place to find out about all thing related to DIY motion simulators. Many members here have started from the same spot your are in, with no idea about motion simulators, electronics or even skills like welding, yet have built their own rig. So don't take the DIY option off the table just yet, their is an active, knowledgeable and supportive community here who can help you properly evaluate, and if you want build your dream simulator.

When you say 3DOF do you mean with traction loss or heave? The budget depends on many design factors but in round figures likely between $1000-$2000.

Nobody has yest passed on any specific hardware details about the Pagnian rig, and it would seem the suppliers are keen to maintain use around their own motion software, so it is an unknown: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/new-to-the-motion-world-doubts.6767/

To get started browse existing member builds for ideas and inspiration, it could well help you refine what you may like to do for your own project: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

You will find the FAQ section covers some more specific topic areas, like types of simulators, designs and motors: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

If you are having a hard time understanding terms or acronyms then have a look at the Glossary of Acronyms and Names: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread.

On your thread do ask questions, there is a lot to take in but the community is good at giving tips during planning, reviewing purchase lists, giving feedback and encouragement during the build and providing advice on actually sorting out motion profiles.

And don't forget to take a moment and add yourself to the Member Map: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/memberMap/

    Good luck with your project.

    Welcome @Corporatezombie,

I've had a short go on the Pagnian system. It seemed to work reasonably well to me, just expensive for what it was. Hence my finding this forum and commencing my own motion simulator project. I haven't tried any other simulators apart from those in arcades, so can't make a comparison as to how good it really is, just that it is lots better than having no motion.

    Thanks for the heads up
Ok, I have some more questions
The problem I have is I can get my head around how to build the hardware side of things and the parts that I need but I have no idea when it comes to the electronics side of things and I'm thinking i don't want to bite off more then i can chew.
If I could increase my budget to around $4000-$6000 what would you guys recommend in a
2DOF platform simulator as complete package and for that kind of money could you get a 3DOF platform simulator that can be sold or delivered to Australia????
Would you guys ever think about buying 2nd hand????

I suspect there would be a range of valueable opinions for a question like that @rotachoc but can I suggest it would be better to create your own thread for it, as it risks cluttering the welcome thread.

Hi my name is Rob from East Coast USA, I just recently got into Sim racing with a g25 and now want to build 3DOF or 5DOF Sim for racing and flying.

I started another thread and would like some suggestions on locating some parts in USA.

Thank you and I hope to spend countless nights reading the forum.

Hey all, My name is Dennis. Everyone who knows me calls me an engineer without a degree. I manufacturer weapons and work with composites for space and aircraft. I am here to learn about building my own sims. I am currently looking to do a 3Dof and a 6Dof. I hope I can use my knowledge of composites to bring some cool things to this build.

I hope to learn from the pros here.

    Welcome @moptop

Given your interests and skills do have a look at @SeatTime's 6DOF that is currently under construction, including custom 12V DIY carbon fiber actuators: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/seattimes-6dof-dc-build.6106/

Also spend some time perusing the FAQs to gain an insight into most aspects of motion simulator construction: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

You may want to consider doing a working model prior to committing to a 6DOF, which is an expensive thing to build. Have a look here for a howto: http://www.xsimulator.net/community...o-driven-model-to-test-your-design-ideas.136/

Alternatively you can do a working design in SketchUp 8 and drive it via SimTools with an actual game: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/design-software.114/

When you are ready do start your own build thread, outline your plans and ask lots of questions.

    Good luck with your project.

Thank you @noorbeast! I will have a look at the info you gave me. I will certainly make models before making the actual units. I hope to make more then 6dof. Maybe look into 4D(Full rolls, front and back, side to side) after I create the two other sims. I will be posting photos during the builds. I am going to call my metal supplier and see what the metal will cost for my 3dof.

    Thanks again!
