Hey Racingmat, I've spent a lot of time on here recently, and somehow missed this thread. Nice work, I just had a lot of questions anserwed. I know I will have more. It's funny I was just at my local farm store today looking at top links for farm implements(to connect motor arms to rig), and thought I cant do $45 a piece right now, I need to order a motor shield and other parts, then I saw you used steering tie rods. Not adjustable, or shiny, but $5 at my local junk yard. You just saved me some money, thank you.

@xytras : mainly because Motomonster can only handle 12V and I was aiming a low cost simulator.

At the end, the torque is enough in 12V (I couldn't withstand full PWM at 12V)
and indeed it increase lifespan of the motors

But Smolka's prices have increased very much: now it's 100€

    @RacingMat

Yes I noticed that at Smolka´s. I am not quite sure how much torque I need, there is quite a wide variation of wiper motors out there.
I assume they should have at least the 48rpm to be handle quick movements, the 404.458 got a torque of 16 Nm. Most of the offered motors don´t give any specs, looks like I need to do some research.
Thanks for the great tutorial btw.

Yes, in the Smolka catalog, there seems to be nothing else suitable...

    Thanks for the compliment!

Good luck for your project :)

Maybe someone wants to build 50 2DOF sets then this could be a nice deal.

48 rpm, is below the speed limit recommended for simulation, I I guess the 48 rpm is the speed at 24v? So if its 12v, thats half the speed.
Buy yourself the faster stronger 12 200 watt 25:1 gearbox motors, try 150 rpm at the shaft. and they are stronger than wipers and as Mat pointed out, near the same price.

EDIT 40-60rpm, so 12v would be 40 rpm, really a bit slow to get decent motion
Ive been through wipers and I can tell you, the difference between 40-50rpm and 150 rpm, is , well, you can guess

Hmm never seen those. You are alking about DC, right? I don´t want to build a setup with AC motors even if they are more powerful.
Normal DC Motors usually don´t like that instant forward/reverse actions for a long time. Which did you use ? Most of the DC gearbox motors I found
so far don´t have enough torque.

These are close to your specs but the price is quite above a used wiper motor.

@xytras as I am local I use these https://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-drive-motor-12v-24v-200w-180-rpm-20nm-torque.html , but there is an equivalent on ebay.
Maybe @Nick Moxley or @noorbeast can advise of a link.
I use then and have with great success for nearly 3 years now.
@eaorobbie uses them to max power on his seat mover for a lot more hours than I do, and they have NEVER failed when used on a properly balanced platform.
I use the motors on my hire sims seat movers which I take to car shows and parties, they are flawless in their performance.
Like anything, disrespect or dont set it right and it can fail, but with a set up like @RacingMat they will be fine, My desk racer motors are under far greater load and have NEVER let me down.
If you want stronger, then use the 50: or 60:1 boxed motors, they are even stronger in gearing as @noorbeast uses them on his platform with great success. By the way, 60:1 is still 70 rpm at the shaft, so put a lever on it of say 50mm and you are up to a linear speed of 250mm per second. Nice and snappy.
25:1 with 50mm lever translates to about 350mm per second.
EDIT, my desk racers sims handle loads of up to 120kg person no problem, granted its for 10 mins though.
    Dave.

I am just 70 kg and my kids even less so the setup will always be below 100kg ;-)
Thanks for the link, $100 sounds okay to me. Maybe I can find something similar over here.

For all European members, can you please post any known European DC motor suppliers with quality motor/gearboxes to add to the FAQs.

The former British Ebay seller no longer stocks the 60:1 DC motors listed in the FAQs and the Smolka motors have had a huge price rise.

Current European members are really needing reasonably priced alternate DC motor suppliers.

Yes hard to find some. I´d consider importing some from asia but they are heavy and this makes their transport expensive. Plus you usually have a high order quantity.
Those at motion dynamics are out of stock as well.

Though there are a number of winches on ebay.

    Like this one: http://www.ebay.de/itm/elektrische-...=LH_DefaultDomain_77&var=&hash=item4636acf5b6
I just don´t know how much rpm they do.

10mtr/min assuming the diameter is 6cm it will do ~18cm per turn so about 55rpm ... too slow

Probably have to look for winches that do 30m per minute.

I bought 1 winch for Heave experiment and it's extremely noisy!... and you won't find quick winches IMO

Yes, same for shutter motors... They got very high torque but only about 4 rpm. Damn I didn´t expect this to be so difficult.
What about scooter motors with an additional chain transition. I know that isn´t the best way and it will be noisy but it should work.
I got one of these 500W types in a kids quad and they are able to move 120kg without problems... though they are 36V.

sorry, these motor have high demand of current at start... and in our simulator, the motor is always starting in a way or another

in the quad, I guess there is a device which deals with a slow ramp at start

Actually there is no slow ramp on the quad. It gives full torque once you pull the "gas". Fast enough that you fall off the quad. (I almost did when I tried the first time.)

However best choice I found so far is a 12V gearbox motor with 20Nm(max) with 65UPM... this makes it at least faster than the 404.458.
    Which is same as
    • Valeo 403799
      • SWF 404242
      • Magneti Marelli 064052209010, TGE522C
Not so sure about the torque because the description says 2Nm up to 20Nm(max) ... searching...
