    Hi All,

I recently built a 2DOF using @Wanegain 's kit, so arduino and sabertooth. It is excellent fun and gets used for many hours a week and cost under £400.
The recent flood of 6DOF builds has me wondering how much money I need to attempt one myself so I have been compiling a shopping list to save up for.
Any views on the listed components and help on finishing the list would be gratefully received. I am UK based so I am looking for UK suppliers or at least those that ship here for a reasonable cost.

    Thanks in advance :cheers

Cool, didn't see that thread. Have been reading all the 6DOF ones I can find!

Well, I still could not be given an answer on the cost of the only 6DOF here that is working... I wonder if anyone knows...

To me it seems like the motors are the key unknown cost, if these could do the job then sub £1000 is a go I think. Possibly less if cheaper wiper motors can be found but I am ok at the £65 a motor if they can handle the job.

I think you are wise to stick with the motors you have chosen over wipers, as the latter are pretty marginal.

The downside with the 60:1 wormgear boxes is that mechanical efficiency drops a lot with increased ratio, anywhere from 10 to 50%. It will be interesting to see how the motors you have chosen perform in actual use.

@SilentChill uses very powerful motors that are operating way above their stated specifications and was he able to save on costs by scavenging them, which for most of us is not an option. The other cost saving approach is building DIY actuators, like @SeatTime. The actual parts cost for @SeatTime's actuators is not that high but the labor cost and skills needed are.

I guess you could go down the 60:1 lever path and if needs be consider converting to DIY actuators if performance is found to be an issue. Either way kudos to you in further experimenting with DC 6DOF, we all learn something from pioneers such as @SilentChill, @SeatTime and yourself.

3 Arduino Unos - MAPLINS! stay away from that place unless you like throwing money away :)
can save at least 50% using ebay for your unos or more with copies.

Shaft couplers - Allow about £1.60 each so say £10

No rush on this build so I have time to hunt down the bargains. Looks like a more powerful motor would be better?
Is there a motor you can suggest? Performance and ease of build are my main concerns over price.

if you want to stick with 12v and <30amps i think you will struggle to find much better than these.

From china there are 23nm ones at 43 amps (100rpm), works out about £700 for 6.
Or 40nm ones at..... an eye watering 80 odd amps!!! more a less the same price.
Basically about 100$ each, betime you add shipping and import taxes will be about £700/£750 odd.

Not sure what the holding torque is on those gear box's though as its a 30:1 gearbox for 100rmp on those. I think the gear boxes and motors are very similar or the same as the industrial/heavy duty ones on the motion dynamics site.

    PSU's factor £10-15 each x 6

    here somewhere,

    http://hzhengbai.en.alibaba.com/productgrouplist-801280903/DC_motor_with_gearbox.html

have been in touch with them, very helpful. part of ZYT series with NMRV50 gearbox. Have all specs, prices and shipping costs.

there is a 24v version as well, 700watt. high torque, and amps within 2x60 sabertooth... but PSU's are not so easy with 24v.
either lots of 12v's in parellel or 6 x 24v psu's which from china again about $100 each.

    Or maybe battery combo??

TBH once you start getting into 24v and 3 x sabertooth 2x60 teritory you may as well almost just go AC and have done with it, i doubt the price would be much different?
