A full frame design is where the wheel and pedals move with the seat and a seat shaker design is when the seat moves but not the wheel and pedals.

The seat shaker design actually has more motion cues at the wrists and ankles and is preferred by a lot of sim racers.

A full frame feels more realistic for flight simmers and the design has its race fans as well.

95% of the PRO level sims that Real race teams use are seat mover's.....I cant honestly say i know of a Race team that uses a Full frame/Dbox style for training.

So a seat mover is probably more agile and require less motor power to achieve the same amount of movement/speed. But why would this be more realistic? Is it because the body is not fully attached to seat in REAL car driving... so when there's a bump the body would move differently vs the car? Is this why the seat mover feel more real when it's really not?

Unfortunately I am no real racer, never been on a real race track. Also, NO I am not going 100mph down the freeway and slam on the brake. :) Fastest car I've drove is a Nissan GTR, but it's not like I drove it around a real race track at 100+. So I really don't know how it should feels.

Maybe I should build one of each... haha!

You're wrong, the brake pedal goes forward :p. Joke aside I totally agree as usual :)

Please "stop" writing about seat mover or not and read this:

Then come back and write again if you would like to do so :)

and does the distance from you to your wheel or pedals change? nope, but they do in a seat mover...............so when i slam on the brakes my dash and pedals do not move towards me or away from me at all, they stay the same distance while i am feeling the forces. but as i said its a matter of taste. i cant have pedals and wheel moving relative to my position. i spent a lot of time getting my wheel and pedals right where i want them and my wheel is so close to my chest (couple inches) a seat mover would squash me. So seat mover isn't an option for me. also i only race no flight. seat mover would work well for flight i would think.

@Pit that looks like an advertisement? still no scientific data supporting either side..........but as i said (third time) its a matter of preference.

@Nick Moxley still wondering where you got the 95% number? do you have a source or did you make it up?

Ok fine 95% might be a tad inflated....ill give you that. Still doesn't change my opinion on the matter, Seat mover's offer Far more realistic motion ques, Full frame's are Slow and Dull in my eyes.

    Yes master.

Alright. So it's not about how it look, but how it will feel and personal preference. Can we end it here?

How it feels is very important. Using a fast and reactive 2DOF the brain will be fooled very effectively, despite of that we sim builders cannot reproduce the real forces at a long distance - but at the short distance we can. IMHO take the occasion and do not waste time or money.

    Hey guys,

This is what I have laying around, any would work best?

Option 1. Is this POT to crappy? I bought two last time from radio shack when I bought a Adruino. But they have a lot of friction when moving by hand.
    http://www.radioshack.com/10k-ohm-linear-taper-potentiometer/2711715.html

Option 2. Vishay Spectrol 1040 5k +-5% (3turn) (spin, but with some friction)

Option 3. Vishay Spectrol 5k +-20% (continuous) (spin easily, no friction at all, this got bearings on it). http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Vishay/157-9002-502/?qs=IpR5h64PZJlenMzCKc9Qlg==

Since Dbox was designed to add motion to movies and not for simulator use I wouldn’t use it either. I’d buy something designed from the ground up to be for simulator use instead if I was going to spend Dbox kind of money for it!

My feeling is any company is going to state reasoning why their product is better than their competitors so I take what they say on their websites with a grain of salt. Also, anyone that always believes what paid spokespeople say (aka pro drivers on company’s websites) is being naive imo.

I suppose then that slow and dull are the only full frames you have seen! But they don’t necessarily have to be that way. It just takes the right design with the right amount of power to compensate for the additional inertia involved making it more difficult for them to achieve the same results. I personally don’t like my feet moving vertically much however when simulating surge. But when a whole frame is heaving vertically, it feels spot on!

Again, I take both paid opinions and sales pitches with a grain of salt since either can be, and likely are, full of bs. :D

    Well put @BlazinH

I do think there are well built machines on both sides though.

I would argue they improved lap times way back.(NASCAR dale jr, Martin truex Denny Hamlin and even the keselowski brothers not to mention many others) without any movement before motion sims and before most guys even used sims to practice. When they were still considered video games. It's seat time. In any seat. The more laps you turn the faster or more relaxed and smoother your laps will be.

And it's still an ad for the same company.

Well, I guess I will have to test out the pot then, since everyone so busy arguing, probably won't get any answer anyway.

This is a radio shack 10kohm linear potentiometer. They work fine. Just wear out quick.
    image.jpg
This is 10kohm wire wound linear potentiometer. Cost a little more not much though. And has already outlasted the ones I started with. Can't speak of halls haven't tried yet. I'll get a better pic of the wire wound and post. But to answer your question I believe they have to be 10kohm and linear. So not sure if the 5k will work. I have 10 meg pots from old project and they do not work.
