    I am around 300 lbs and want my motors to have a mild/longer throw. I am building a 3DOF unit. Need to keep cost in mind as well. Any help is welcome.

    For a big bloke sim you will definitely want to take full advantage of leverage in your design, I am guessing when you say 3DOF you mean something like a shoulder mount seat shaker with traction loss?

    I would like to make a platform 3dof... Being weight an issue. Thinking maybe a center strut or support to aid the motors ?

    If it is 3DOF with heave you want then yes you will need spring assist.

    Others have used custom made springs and you could also consider the strut from the rear of some small cars, though those designs tend to be pretty big to allow for the strut.

    While I am confident my compact sim can take a big bloke I would not recommend it for daily use, you would be better off maximising the leverage more, even if using a similar type sprung pivot.

    That is a good design... Although I am looking for a larger footprint machine. I would like it to be like the one in this link. My main concern is weight. I need a set of motors that will take me, rig, and do it for hours on end without heat issues. Can you suggest any motors that would be useful ?

    ok so that looks like more than I want to get involved with my first time around. So what kind of DC motor would I need for a larger scale machine. I would like to have close to the same configuration in the link. Knowing now that AC right now is not going to be an option. maybe more like this to aid the motors ?

    Although a member did it in the past with 12v boat winch motors, assisted spring and JRKS, but he was half your weight.
    Whats your intended games? Race? Flight?

    Would like to play games like project cars. mainly race sims.

    What configuration would you suggest would give me the best bang for the buck.. I am a welder and have cheap and very good resources for materials.

    300lbs is not a lightweight but imo you could get it working by using 12V winches but beware the noise they produce. The main problem would be to aquire cheap and working motor drivers. NTL if you like mainly racing sims you should go the 2DOF route plus an additional DOF for traction loss.

    Could you give me an idea of what type of winch motor... or will any winch do ? Also motor drivers what resources would you have on those

    Construction and fabrication and configuration (mechanical/Software) is my strong points. I know little about ratios and what ratings certaint parts require to be hardy enough to take a 300 plus pound beating

    You really should nail down the design first, as motors choice depend somewhat on design, performance expectations, and what is available for a particular budget.

    Maybe a sticky for this and related questions - Ie. 'So you want to build a 6DOF'. It is not as simple/cheap as many new to this hobby may think.

    1- regarding the latest video for 3DOF these are servo motors which are more expensive than the normal AC 3phase induction motors ...

    100% agree with bsft, Ive had a 300Lbs buddy in my rig on 25:1 and ya sure they weren't as fast as with me in the seat, but still they did their job.
