    How much will cost ?
I hope they offer a basic pack version without xbox one control, because I don't need it.

    The timing is pure marketing.

Palmer has been on a recent Tweet storm indicating the price will be higher than expected, and CV1 Rift pre-orders open just prior to the HTC/Valve CES announcement of the 'really big breakthrough' that resulted in the delay of the Vive.

Consumers are being put in a bit of an awkward quandary. The Oculus Touch controllers have been delayed until much later in 2016, so it is not the complete VR 'package' and it is not yet clear when the price for Touch will be known. For me the release versions of the Vive and Rift are no longer on par, but for others room scale tracking and VR controllers will not really be an issue, though price will be.

I expect many will plan to jump on CV1 Rift pre-orders, but may well plan to cancel that pre-order depending on what becomes known about the Vive. However I equally expect that there will likely be further machinations regarding Vive cost, to keep consumers off balance.

As a VR enthusiast I plan on getting both the Rift and Vive, I already have my new GearVR even though it is still not officialy on sale in Australia. But after such a long wait for consumer VR I am far less hyped than I expected, as I am somewhat over the market manipulation leading up to the release of the Rift and Vive. But for others pre-order fever will be at its zenith.

What could a 'really big breakthrough ' be? Smells like HTC is trying to buy time and Oculus is taking advantage.

Early days I know, but in terms of vendor / software support, which VR tech has the upper hand?

For those that recall...I don't want to back Betamax only to have VHS win out.
Or back LaserDisc when DVD is around the corner....

CV1 should have the upper hand. They had dev kits out sooner and seems like more games are already supported. CV1 will cost less which will lead to more sales. Facebook is also wealthier to fund Development. Seems to me CV1 has the lead. The winner will be the company that continues to innovate and invest in developers.

Personally I think it is too early to tell and it is unlikely that it will shake out in the first gen anyway. Long term Valve aims to support as many VR HMDs as possible and it is in their interest to do so. Interestingly though HTC is setting up its own shopfront for devs and content. Oculus on the other hand benefits long term from lock in to content, and they have invested heavily in first gen titles. From a developer perspective if you are not being paid by Oculus then it is likely that it is in their best interest to have their game or app easily deployable and used on any VR HMD. It is a very small market so devs really have to make the most of it...economics 101.

Oculus certainly had dev kits out earlier but many have been soaked up by consumers, including members here. Much of the early dev experimentation with the Rift has not been updated to the latest runtime and many existing games with Rift implementation are at best half heated, like Assetto Corsa and War Thunder, or problematic with the latest runtimes, such as Elite Dangerous.

It will be interesting to see what the lawyers may do but Palmer has said that he is not concerned about others hacking Rift specific content to run on other HMDs, just that Oculus will not fund such development. It may be a bit of a moot point as SteamVR matures as a potentially unifying access interface, much like Steam has become for games.

In terms of there being a clear 'leader' technically speaking most reviews suggest the experiences are pretty close between the Vive and Rift, though general consensus is that the Lighthouse tracking is more robust and flexible and room scale tracking adds to immersion, while the Oculus ergonomics are superb and Touch is sleeker as an input device as well as being simple to set up and use within a reasonable tracked are. But of course Touch is not available with the Rift. Many have argued that Oculus has been playing catch up with Touch since the surprise initial reveal of the Vive with robust room scale tracking.

Even with sponsored content there is not going to be mainstream AAA VR support for a good while yet. It is certainly not likely in gen 1 of consumer VR. There will be glimpses of what AAA VR will be like, such as EVE: Valkyrie, but I personally think that is likely on par in a technical sense with the likes of Elite Dangerous, Project Cars, iRacing, LFS and others. In my view the hype around Valkyrie is more about game play rather than some innovation concerning VR itself. Simply put content will be limited in Gen 1 of consumer VR and hence is not a really good indicator of there being a 'winner'. The longer term 'winner' is likely to be whoever gains the upper hand in dominating content distribution.

    I am really excited, finally!!!

I have already set my alarms to get up at 5 AM NZ time for the pre-order. I will probably end up buying both a Rift and a Vive. I just build myself a new i7 6700K PC and I am keeping my i7 3770K as a second VR computer that I will probably use to do room scale VR with the Vive. When the new Pascal Nvidia GPUs come out then I will move my GTX 980 to my i7 3770K PC so then I will have 2 VR capable PC's

I also have parts arriving this week to build a second VR capable PC, in anticipation of having the Rift and Vive and perhaps doing different things with them given the Vive has room scale capabilities.

Unfortunately there likely won't be much change left from $1,000 AUD once you factor in the exchange rate and rip-off postage :(.

Likely so @SeatTime, but VR is my real passion.

I just put more than twice that into parts just to have a second VR capable PC and have allowed more than $1000 for the Vive, in addition to the Rift, plus the Note 5 so I could get GearVR.

Unfortunately though for many people the first gen consumer VR prices may be a bit much, we will know in a couple of days one way or the other.

Yeah, I will have to pay through the nose for shipping and tax being in NZ.

But still the shipping and tax will be nothing compared to my bigger ticket items like my GS-4 and Accuforce.

Like @noorbeast I have spent double that on my i7 6700 upgrade by the time you add in the water cooler, case, SSD and RAM etc. I figured since I was upgrading so much of my PC it would be better to rebuild the old one as another VR rig. it will be cool to have a second VR rig though. I will move the DK2 to my old PC till the Vive comes out.

Is it just me who is seriously skeptical about all this?

HTC started to hype up their product and it still looks like the Vive is around 4 months away and from all reviews appears to have the upper hand according to reviewers when they talk about the immersion and natural feeling of the headset.

People criticised HTC for not releasing in 2015 even though they never really confirmed any release dates. So this ultimately took the heat off Oculus who originally planned to release almost 2 years ago. It looks like Oculus have just jumped back on the bandwagon and decided to make a preemptive strike to get their name back in the headlines although it almost feels like a panic move to make it appear like they're back in front again. To me it seems like a fairly even race. I would hope it doesn't turn into the usual fanboy fight which usually ends in one company struggling even though they may have the better hardware.

Here's my problem with both companies:
Neither have released a price. Both companies are holding back to see what the other one with price at so they can adjust to suit the market demand. Basically an underhand tactic to see how much profit they can squeeze out of it.
Oculus taking pre orders tomorrow even though it would appear they're not anywhere near ready to release a final version of their hardware. Is it to gauge interest to see how many they need to make?
HTC needs to step up to the plate and give some sort of press release as to the real details of where they're at, rather than these nonsense hints and snippets they keep hinting on social media.

I think they will be pretty close. I have read recent reviews saying the the Oculus was better but the overall feeling that I get from all the reviews is that it is extremely close between the Vive and the Rift.

I will probably end up getting both because I play a lot of iRacing that only supports the rift as does a few of the other games I play, but then I also want to do the room scale VR on the Vive. I will probably have my Rift on my racing simulator and the Vive in the lounge for room scale VR.

I think the Oculus is ready to release their final version. They shipped the SDK 1.0 and final version of the hardware to Devs back in December, this is the same version that the public will get.

    https://developer.oculus.com/blog/rift-sdk-1-0-shipping-to-developers-with-final-rift-hardware/

I hope this doesn't cause the Vive to be rushed out early. I hope they take their time and get it perfect.

I think competition is really good for VR, it will push each other to get better and better for the Gen2 VR headsets. Hopefully they can make a standardised API like Steam VR so you don't have the problem where you have some games only supporting the rift and others only supporting the Vive.

The Steam integration of HTC Vive is interesting... I just hope that developers get the choice and Vive / Valve / Steam don't penalise developers for supporting Rift, or for releasing games that ONLY support the rift. I hope it becomes a collaboration of technology and not another Apple / Android'esqe face off...

I can't afford to buy any of them really, but I am edging more to the Rift.... So when I do pull the trigger I need to be sure :)

It is not in Valve's interest to penalize devs, quite the opposite Valve does not really care what HMD is used, their interest is that Steam remains the primary gaming access portal for content. SteamVR will support the Rift.

You don't have to make an impulse decision @Archie, both the Rift and Vive will be in consumer hands in this quarter, so there will be plenty of side by side reviews in the real world, rather than carefully controlled trade shows.

I would mainly buy a VR system for using it with Assetto Corsa but, according to last year's day post by Massarutto

"Talking about R&D, we would like to say a few words about Oculus VR: in 2016, this incredible device will finally be available with a definitive and standard SDK. It is in our intention to fully support the device in Assetto Corsa when it is finally available for public purchase with a proper and final library, since while still in beta version we need to redo the code support from scratch each time a new SDK is released, which understandably cannot be a sustainable – long term – strategy."

they never ever named Valve's VIVE so I - sadly, cause I'd have bought the VIVE - would get myself the Oculus. Unless meanwhile they'd announce support for the Vive too (but I fear not)
