BRD's gameport steering wheel question.

In 2006, I bought a new but very cheap gameport steering wheel from BRD (Ballracing development). Because I don't have the space to build a motion simulator just yet and because I don't have any hardware at the moment to play race games, I'm not going to buy a new wheel. So I want this wheel to work for now.

Problem is:

* I don't know how to get this wheel to work with XP home SP3. I don't want to buy a gameport to USB converter, it's not certain that it will work.

* I don't know if the wheel itself still works. But 4 LED's on the wheel flashes when I connect it to the gameport (I bought a Trust 5.1 soundcard with gameport onboard) and when I press the buttons.

* I installed windows 98 and still no reaction in windows what so ever when I connect the wheel to the gameport (found the trust 5.1 win 98 drivers). I even tried with a virtual_machine win 98 installement.

So my question is:

Is there a cheap way to convert the 15 pin gameport to a 9 pin serial port and use the X-sim² software to convert the signals?
I have a R323 to USB converter from Velleman to make the K8063 work and maybe I could use this conveter if it is possible to convert the 15 pin gameport into a 9 pin serial port (R323).

I know that it's a R'n'R interface. But I thought that I could use the schematic of the 15 pin port <=> 9 pin port.

have you had a look in Device Manager , under the heading of Human Interface Devices to make sure the Gameport driver is loaded correctly. If it is, then you have to configure the Steering Wheel under Game Controllers in Control
Panel, click on add, then custom and change the settings to suit your wheel, and follow the prompts to complete the setup.
I have an old Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1 Wheel on the kids computer, which is setup through the gameport of an old sound card, the speakers use the onboard sound on the motherboard, the old soundcard is just for the gameport.
It is running XP Pro SP3 without any problems at all, no lag at all, very responsive.

In Device Manager, under the Sound video and game controllers ' heading does it show up as Game Port.

Yes, it does. I tnink there's something wrong with the electronics.

I found a solution though. I'm going to convert the steering/pedals into a USB device. It's a non FFB gameport wheel, so no problems there.

Yes, that's a great idea. If you're not afraid do do a little soldering, THIS product will be perfect for your purposes.

I've been thinking the same thing. But I dodn't know which one is the most suitable solution for this little DIY project. The BU0836 - the BU0836X - BU0836A or the BU0836 -LC.

I wrote an email to Leo with some questions regarding his joystick controller but I haven't got an answer, yet. I also registered at his forum but the admins don't activate my account.

My idea was to use the electronics of a Logitech joystick, the Attack 3. But the potmeters travel, the ones that I bought (100k and 270° turn) is too long and I can't get them calibrated, properly .

I think I'm going to order the BU0836. But Leo told me on eksimracing that I could pay by bank transfer. As long as he doesn't answer my email, with his bank account number, I won't be able to pay.

I think the base BU0836 would be all you need for this simple conversion. I would think it would be pretty easy for you to integrate that controller in that wheel.

fftopic: Yes, I know about PayPal but I don't have a credit card and I'm not getting a PayPal account using my debit card. I've heard too many bad things about PayPal.


First, I'm going to make an H and sequential shifter (all in one), using the Logitech Attack 3 joystick. When this is ready, I'll start converting the pedals/steering wheel using Leo's hardware.

If all these things work out well, I'm going to try to make a pedal box, steering wheel (not the electronics, the gears (helical or straight)) using Leo's hardware, EK's software.

To create your PayPal account you can use yours Account number (credit card number is only additional thing - to speed up payment process). PayPal is expensive but only for those who`s selling something and is perfectly safe (protections from PayPal himself and yours Bank). Go for it - i have it three years now without any single problem. It is so easy to use.

First test with the DIY H-pattern and sequential shifter is looking very promising. Tested it in netKar Pro. Converted a Logitech Attack 3 joystick to function as an H/sequential shifter.
