I wanted to ask members, why build a 6DOF Base-Frame as a triangle? Wouldn't it make more sense to build it formed like a "Y" with the Control Box sitting in the middle and the cables spreading out to each to not have them overlapping and to have to shortest possible way to each actuator? This also help with the CoG, i think.

    Greetings,
    Cedric

    Hi Cedric,
sorry for the late reply. I got the notification at 11:04 this morning, but when I wanted to answer I couldn't find your posting in the original thread. There was no mentioning that some mod apparently moved it to a new thread with a made up topic and modified text.

Anyway, you're right, a Y shaped base would have been an alternative, but the triangle uses less parts and, I believe, is more stable.

A thread when it concerns a particular rig should stay on topic regarding that rig, as historically it gets really difficult for future members to subsequently find stuff when others introduce all sorts of off topic stuff.

It is easy enough to start a specific thread to be topic specific, and if you want tag a member, if you feel they have something specific to contribute, that way the tagged member will get an auto notification and can jump into the off topic matter if they feel they can contribute: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/tag-a-member.73/

Keep in mind the specific question being posed in this thread concerns 6DOF design, though can be applicable to a 3DOF, and depending on where it goes that is a worthwhile discussion, that may in time prove valuable, as both design approaches have their pros and cons, some of which have not yet been fully teased out such as simplistic structural rigidity and aesthetics,

a Y shape will be weaker - but you could bolt it to the floor for extra strength
