    The purpose of a motion simulator is not to accurately model all real forces, that is impossible, but rather to exploit physiological and psychological processing weaknesses to have the brain accept something as real that it knows is not.

    Hi, thanks for the reply. Understood, according to this, my question is: is it more acceptable to the human brain not to experiment anything or to experiment a wrong feedback? I am taking about a plane turning, of course.

    Wrong is a tricky notion, both in real life flight and motion simulation.

    For example, for an aircraft in a particular sustained dive, an unconstrained passenger will experience what they perceive to be weightlessness, but the strapped in pilot will experience the same thing as sustained pressure relative to the the seat and harness.

    When it comes to motion simulation there are some key tricks that are often used that are actually false cues, but executed below perceptual thresholds, one of the most common is the use of washout filters.

    It is surprising how effective both tactile vibrations and motion can be at tricking the brain, if refined correctly. Here is my late father, who had years of experience on my motion rig, thinking there was motion when in fact it was off and there was just carefully crafted transducer vibrations:

    Very interesting testimony. I remember trying, years ago, a car racing simulator with probably only 2DOF (I can't remember and at the time I did not have the necessary knowledge), but I could run a full 3 laps in Monza with a visor on, while now, sitting on a chair, I cannot even drive 500m or two turns without feeling sick... This to say that even a very basic motion rig can make a very big difference in terms of perception!

    Thanks to your father for this example, I am sure he is enjoying himself wherever he is now!

    Thanks for your kind words re my late father.

    Motion and tactile simulation, if well tuned, can greatly augment the likes of VR.

    My personal pathway into motion simulation was via the very early days of VR, looking for ways to enhance experiences even further. I do believe that VR + quality motion/tactile simulations, bolstered by quality peripherals, is the most compelling gaming experience currently available in your own home!
