Considering the price of ODrive boards, I was wondering if it was possible to set up a direct drive wheel with an Arduino Leo. I'm confident in my soldering and assembly skills, but firmware and compatibility side, I'm very unsure of.

Sure, but you will still need a motor driver.

You’ll need an odrive or a VESC. There aren’t many good enough motor drivers available suitable for DD FFB.
    You can’t shop from AliExpress?

I understand the motor options. Where are you located, and what stores do you have access to?

Amazon? just search “odesc India” and maybe you’ll find something. Hard to help you source parts from the other side of the world.

No I can’t. But a normal sensored driver isn’t enough. You need encoder support and FOC. I don’t know any other suitable drivers than the Vesc and the odrive. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any options though. It’s just easier with the odrive since you can put everything in it and not need another mcu
