    As of 5/22/24 we just finished the base frame without steering wheel or motor support yet.

    We have tried it where someone sits on it and the other person moves the seat around and it feels super crazy. We are super happy to have made it this far with no major problems. We chose to go with a car seat because it was cheap and adjustable both distance from the pedals & steering wheel.

    What follows is a super high level of the steps we took to get this:

    upload_2024-5-22_23-57-49.png

    Before anything we designed everything in SolidWorks to make sure our design was feasible of course.

    First, we collected our steel: 20' 1.5" 14ga for our top frame, 24' 1.25" 14ga for our bottom frame, drive shaft from F-250 Super Duty for the universal joint, seat from a Lambo, various fasteners, and 2 steel purlin clips to connect the drive shaft to the bottom and top frame.

    With our material, we then bought the cheapest angle grinder we could find $15 and cut all the steel and welded it together.

    Welding the drive shaft after further cutting it down (sorry for bad photo quality):

    Excuse the bad looking weld we stacked 4 beads and one of the passes was super quick.

    We are still looking for motors and gear steppers (<$200 preferably if you have any suggestions), and I will add to this post next time we make significant progress on the build, should be around August or September of this year.

    Right now I was eyeing some AmpFlow $49 motors on Amazon along with some $50 worm gear boxes ($19 on Alibaba, but extremely inconvenient to ship, I may place an order in now though). With these the Sabertooth 2x32 Driver with an Arduino.

    good lookings welding is overrated ;D my joints look also terrible but they work and a good sander helps afterwards :D

    Finally, we have movement on the rig (w/ SMC3) ... I purchased the DIY version of SimTools now do I have to purchase the 1 year sub here too? Or is there a DIY deal or something. Thank you.

    We’re having a problem right now where it starts vibrating and then it stays in that state so I have to go back to SMC3 to reset them. The motion in sine waves and “motion” in SMC3 seems smooth and what I want in game feel to be but then I go over to the game and then the crazy vibration occurs. I tried looking for similar instances here but couldn’t solve the problem based off a few of the most common solutions to vibrating motors. (Game meaning AC + sim tools)

    SMC3 does need to be fully sorted before messing with SimTools.

    That said, posting pictures of your SMC3 settings running the Sine test, then all SimTools settings, will help members make suggestions.

    I will post in a month or so… going on break from school but here is video of the vibrations occurring today:
    https://youtube.com/shorts/e_eN3b_TlyM?si=vd-C3DsNwOX2Whhn
    Kp: 105 Fpwm: 15 kHz Some maxes
    0 Pwm max = 165
    0
    1

    from memory those are my settings. I will post ss in a bit. One of the motors gets really hot, one stays warm but fine to touch… burning smell coming from the hot one a little worrying maybe pwm too high?

    A burning smell is never a good sign

    Please post pictures of all settings and details about all hardware.

    Okay, my settings for SMC3 go as follows:
    kp=316, ki=12,kd=20,ks=5
    pwmin=0,pwmax=155,pwmrev=155
    limit=clip=100,deadzone=1
    PWMfreq = 15-25 (no apparent difference in this range)

    I also tried it with defaults of kp=400,ki=kd=0, and ks = 1 and it worked but there appeared to be no difference between these two settings.

    Like I said earlier, the motor had a good feel when in SMC3, only when we moved it over to SimTools is when it got a bit sporadic. I did both Sine test, and motion and it was fine.

    Here are some more photos of the rig:[IMG]
    [IMG]
    and the lever arm assembly:
    [IMG]
    For the wiring diagram we made (5V logic side, 24V power side):
    [IMG]

    Right now my concerns:
    - One motor gets much hotter than the other (driver side left)
    - Resistors are not getting warm at all, stay cool to the the touch
    - Smooth (ish) in SMC3 and then in SimTools has crazy vibrations (see video from prev post)
    - On acceleration there was no pitch motion (under surge) for acceleration even when turned to max
    - In game once we saw a small bit of motion it would move like crazy, vibrate, or go out of bounds (I think into the deadzone set in SMC3) and stop moving completely

    Note: not sure if the images are loading if I click edit I can see them, but not out of the edit mode please lmk

    Can you please post pictures of your SMC3 settings running the Sine test.

    Have you tried a shorter CTC on the lever, as too much can stress a motor.
