This entirely depends on your circuitry right now, how are you reading your potentiometer values, Arduino, Thanos controller, other means?
    What is the device?
You will probably need just a simple script but it depends on your feeback processor. Without knowing this nobody can help you.

Here I'm reading encoder from Panasonic servo motor with dspic http://www.anvianet.fi/dzy/servo/encoder.wmv as has been said before it all depends on what you're running with. Most encoders are quadrature in nature and there are plenty of examples on the net on how to read them.

I have no experience with Thanos controller so that would be a question you would have to put to him in his controller topic.
Maybe he has encoder reading built into his AVR and you may just have to toggle the switches.
