    Hello all,

Long time lurker here from the UK.

I have a triple screen rig and looking to move into motion. I have looked at the countless threads on here but I'm a bit worried about starting my project. All the DIY rigs are great anddifferent in their own way but I would like some definitive answers before I start buying things so I don't start throwing money away.

I run my own aluminium profile business so the frame is not an issue, looking to use worm gear motors as these look more reliable from what I have seen here. I believe I would need the following:

    2x Motors
    2x JRK 12v12
    1x PSU
    Cooling solutions for the JRKs
    2x 10k pots with 360 movement
Universal joint, ball joints etc are not a problem (used to be a mechanic)

Looking for shoulder mounting seat I believe correct placement is 30 deg on both axis from the bucket seat?

I love some of the threads here but have not really found a definitive guide from start to finish that I would be confident on following. The software side, coding is putting me off too as I have seen some people posting coding here.

I did find a thread or 2 with some wiring diagrams but want to be 100% before I bite the bullet.

Am I close so far, anything I have missed or overlooked? If I can source parts in the UK it would be preferred or within Europe really.

I would appreciate any advice you guys can give.

Thanks, keep up the good work!

    Kris

No coding involved if going with jrk. There really are no hard set of rules to follow.

Your parts list looks ok. May need 2 power supplies depending on what your looking at.
I have 60 degrees hooked up to my seat.

Might also want to look into 180 degree hall effect pots also as there is no contact inside to wear out, and they also track very well.

    Good luck with the build.

    Hey Jem,

Thanks for the reply, really appreciated. So from what I have read then and what you say, I just have the software for the JRKs and follow that. I dont know if you have SLI Max Manager for a display unit but I suppose the software will be similar to that?

So now I need to see what type of motors I need, from what I have seen here I dont want plastic gears as they seem to wear very quickly. I cant remember where I saw the link but a few people have posted a link to some that are quite popular but I think they are in the US. Im just wary of any custom charges etc and unexpected bills.

I don't want to be modding any power supplies and they seem fairly cheap (Around £20) on ebay that people have used. I would be happy to have 2 if required.

    Somebody recommended these pots also:

    Thanks again,

    Kris

    Hi Jem,

Thanks again, your input even so far is making me feel better about this. Am I over complicating things?

What spec PSU should I be looking for, do I get one better rated or 2 lower rated?

I did find these on Ebay:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-STORM...omputing_PowerSupplies_EH&hash=item3a8b1bcba4

    or:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-12V-24...urement_Equipment_ET&var=&hash=item43c6301739

    I would go 12v 30A? (JRK Peak is 30A)

Would also prefer PC style if possible, with on/off switch and they look neater I think. I think I would use the 5v for some other misc. items, leds etc for the rig.

The motors, I have read a lot where people talk about the RPM / NM I will keep searching based on the specs of yours and see if I can find them in the UK.

With the motors/pots I presume there is no need to line everything up like replacing a cambelt? I just mount as others have done through the spindle and the software takes care of everything?

On the software side, I presume JRK software is provided with the PCB?

Sorry for all the questions and again your help is appreciated.

    Kris

That pc supply you linked doesnt have the required amperage. Look for what I showed you. You will need 1 for each motor. They are cheap.

    Thanks Jem,

I have just been trawling RS Components to see if they do any motors similar but struggling. In the Ebay listing for yours it says about a reversing kit, I presume I dont need this as the JRK takes care of everything.

I have seen the Dell version on Ebay UK and I am now looking at the HP ones, not bad for £17 each.

    Thanks bud.

    Here is the ps pinout.

You want to short pins 6, 8, 10

Instead of shorting on the power supply, I ran the wires up to toggle switches by my wheel and make the short with the switches. Very convenient to turn on motor power from there.

Nick has also used the same components on his. Check out his thread here. You can find all answers between the two threads.

The JRK has a utility program with drivers that initially needs to be installed once you get the JRKS, but after that, its some simple PID numbers, motor power settings, set the feedback and you are off.
No coding whatsoever , they just work and work well.
@jem45472 has covered just about all here.

Thanks for that, between Jem and Nicks threads alone there is a whole world of information. There is not a lot on the setup side so I will dig into the other sub forums here on the software and get reading.

I see Nick ordered some other motors from the same guy on Ebay and I quite like the shape of them over the original ones so may opt for them. Im just waiting for the seller to give me an accurate quote for shipping.

Quite daunting at this stage basically because its stepping into the unknown but I am fairly decent with my hands an will have this up as soon as funds allow!

Thanks again to you both for your input so far, no doubt I will be back with more questions!

    Hi Bsft,

Thats the website I was looking for earlier, thanks for the link. They look like they list the same motors as what Jem has recommended, or a very close match to them: http://www.motioncontrolproducts.co...-motors-and-geared-motors.php?cat=1.php?cat=1

Now, only 1 question here...What is the difference between the 2 on the PDF, I have no idea what to look for. If they are suitable I will see if I can get a price, must be cheaper than importing from Canada.

I ended up just having to order from Canada. I couldn't get anything close to the spec of those crab pot motors for less than about £200 each in the uk so even with the postage and fees they're cheaper.

    Here's the spec you need.
    12V DC
    Output speed after gearbox: 110rpm+

I have a very similar setup to what you're building. JRKs, crab pot motors, HP server power supplies (got them off ebay for £27 for 2 delivered), etc, so I'll be keeping an eye on your progress. Good luck with it.

Oh, those motors by motion control products aren't really suitable. I called them and I can't remember exactly but they either weren't fast enough or didn't have enough torque. They even told me that it would cost big money to get the spec I needed.

Thanks for letting me know, I will bite the bullet and order from Canada if need be. Best put some cash aside for customs!

Im in no rush to get this built, hell, Im getting married in a few months so cash a bit tight. If I end up ordering say the motors this month and the JRKs next then so be it.

Pgsaw as per Ebay from Nic and Jem:
Motors from Canada $89.99 (usd) each and $85 shipping = £158

    Motion Dynamics:
Motors from Austrailia $109 (aud) each and $145 shipping = £200

    Well, thats that solved then!
