2dof with Traction Loss

    Just thought i'd share my 2dof with traction loss build

    Had an old ps2 racing seat ready to be binned when i found heaps of people building simulators with wiper motors, then decided to stick an old nissan seat i had laying round.

    did some further investigation and found the wiper motors tend to fail quite easy so bought some worm gear motors 20nm 200w from motion dynamics in sydney.

    Decided to make it 2dof with traction loss as I would only hope to build this once so also got a lazy susan

    added a gear shift mount and a handbrake which ill hook up later

    found the balance point by sitting in the seat with a metal pipe underneath and perpendicular to the frame and just rocked back and forth til front and back were not touching the ground. then attached a uni joint

    made a mid section for the frame and attached the motors and lazy susan

    added a bottom section with some spare timber flooring i had, attached caster wheels to the mid section, cut some metal brackets to use for levers, welded some tie rod ends to some rods and attached to the motors.

    traction loss motor was attached to the mid section with a rod connected to the bottom section

    made a platform for the arduino/motor monsters

    painted up and looking abit more pretty.

    mounted an emergency stop switch to the 5v before the motor monsters.

    currently i am using the smc3 code and 2 motor monsters, one for 2dof and the other for traction loss. I believe i may need one per motor as the 2dof motors will shutdown if there is constant force at the axis limit. eg. if i lean too far to one side after about 5 seconds the motor will shutdown. the force and response from the motors seem strong and if i set the axis limit to a low setting it seems to work fine. I have also set the max limit in smc3 to 0 so the motors are not switch off from the utility.

    I will also add some legs out the side as there have been quite a few times when the whole thing has nearly tipped over (driving nurburgring in assetto corsa) so its a bit too narrow

    Apart from that everything else seems to work good including the traction loss but now i need to experiment with all the profile settings.

    I just want to say a big thanks to the simtools creators and @RufusDufus for the smc3 code and utility and to all you guys for helping me to get one of these things in my house.

    Awesome work man. I would suggest a widened base or lower the mounting of the CV joint to lower the center of gravity a little. I made my base about 8" wider than the seat frame so it should be fairly stable.

    Nice work but be cautious, the coolers on the Motomonsters are too small, despite of that they need active cooling.

    Hi @daddydeano, nice work! Just a suggestion - your use of a cv joint will probably lead to some twisting during motion which would need to be braced against rotation. Alternatively, if you use a drive shaft universal joint there's no need to brace.

    I did put some bigger heatsinks on the motor monsters before testing and now i have some 12v pc fans on the way.

    ill try to start out with some large brackets as legs out the sides and hopefully that'll be enough.


    thanks for the heads up. hopefully its not too bad for now coz my holidays are over so may be a bit of a wait for any bigger changes to the frame. :(
