Has anyone tride this gearbox motor combo? It's 24v but only 120 watts. I have two of these and was thinking about picking up another to convert my rig to a 3DOF.

    Is the wattage too low?

I have not had any experience with these, but to give a bit of context a 3DOF requires a lot of torque, even on my compact 3DOF, which has assisted heave to take some of the load, I use 200w motors with 60:1 wormdrives.

Is the 3dof you mentioned meant for “heave”?
I saw that this person made a platform with a 250w motor.

I don't know if it was completed.
I think I might not have enough strength.
It seems that it should be used at a minimum of 350w 60:1 and a lever distance of 60mm or less.

I agree. I'm going to look around for some 200 watt motors that will mate up with the gearbox.

Again for context, rather than direction, this is my compact 3DOF with assisted heave: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/dx-compact-simulator.5866/

Personally I believe more power is required for reliable unassisted heave and heavy users.

While my rig has stood up well over time, technology has moved on, if I were to do it again now I would seriously consider servos with appropriate drives: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/amc-aasd15a-servo-controller.351/

I was looking at doing a traction loss setup like what D-max (Dave) built on here. Sorry I don't have the link. I think servo is definitely the way to go. I spoke with the engineers at my work about my idea and there going to figure out the best and most cost effective approach would be. I plan on using the gearboxes I have, just replacing the motors.

Hello, I'm building my own 3DOF rig, in fact I'm close to finish it. You can see the Milani's Fabio rig, I based mine on that.

BTW, I choose 750W 60 rpm motors, you can see my build in my thread (I'll post the link soon as I'm writing it right now :) )

    Cheers

Thanks for the info Josh! I'll be checking it out once I get home from work.

I think I have everything figured out except where to buy the motors from. Not trying to spend $500 for each motor!
