    Hey everyone, I'm brand new to this entire idea of home motion simulation, and I think the work you all have done is incredible. I am extremely interested in designing and building my own 6Dof motion simulator for both flight and racing simulation. As I have little experience in both engineering and fabrication I expect this will be a long project over the span of a few years. Right now I'm curious how to design a 3d model of a Stewart Platform in a program such as SketchUp or 3dsMax. Thanks for all the inspiration everyone, I'm looking forward to challenge ahead.

    There are plenty of online tutorials on how to use SketchUp but you can also hook it up to SimTools and drive a model with an actual game: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/how-to-animate-sketchup-3d-model-with-simtools.209/

    A 6DOF is a complex and costly project so you may want to build a working model before committing either, just so you have an idea of what is involved: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/build-a-working-model-to-test-your-design-ideas.216/

    Also have a good read through the 6DOF project threads: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/list-of-6dof-projects.179/

    Thanks for the links and the advice :) My plan is to first model the platform on my computer, then build a small scale replica, and work out how to deal with the software and electronics. I have about $5,000 to spend on the project right now, though I'd like to make sure I have the knowledge to put it all together before I start spending any kind cash.

    Just zip the SketchUp file and post it as an attachment. Others can then download it and run it in SketchUp.

    I included my settings in the earlier post to show how I had the Interface and Axis setup and that is handy if you want others to test something for you.

    Hit a hiccup with the simtools controller in sktchup... For some reason it only outputs to axis 1, 2, and 3. Also I'm curious why it says requires sketchyphysics 3.7.1! in the top left corner. I have the 3.7.1 installed.

    Before moving on to other things did you run the simple model I linked to with the settings I provided with LFS?

    I just want to verify it is all working before the complexity of a 6DOF model is added.

    You will also find axis 3 inverted ... maybe this next link will help ... plus maybe " I didn't try this " adding a 4,5,6 Axis in the ruby file " when edited as text" will solve your 6 DOF Single Interface output controller problem in SimTools .

    Thanks @speedy, I have added both bits of your info to the SketchUp Guide: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/how-to-animate-sketchup-3d-model-with-simtools.209/

    Thanks @noorbeast ... I guess it will be like this ...

    require 'socket.so'
    socket = UDPSocket.new
    socket.bind("127.0.0.1", 3157)
    timer_id = UI.start_timer(0.01, true) {
    message, sender = socket.recvfrom_nonblock(100)
    message1, message2, message3, message4, message5, message6 = message.split(";")
    $axis1 = message1.to_f / 256.0
    $axis2 = message2.to_f / 256.0
    $axis3 = message3.to_f / 256.0
    $axis4 = message4.to_f / 256.0
    $axis5 = message5.to_f / 256.0
    $axis6 = message6.to_f / 256.0}

    Nice work @DocLove :thumbs

    Do you plan on making the SketchUp file available?

    Most definitely, the model isn't quite up to snuff yet due to my original lack of knowledge using sketchup. There will be more versions to come :)
