    hello guys,
it's been a few years since my first simulator,
10 years ago to create a 2dof i used a velleman k8055 paired with a sabertooth 2x12, and as a software i use xsim because i remember that i had problems connecting simtools with the k8055,
i was thinking if it was the case to change the board, that's why i ask you some questions:

    1) what is the best board today for value for money to replace the k8055 board?
    2) are there cheaper alternatives to sabertooh 2x12?
    3) why is xsim no longer used and simtools is preferred?

    thanks

Step back for a moment, there are alternate code options written for SimTools to include support for Sabertooth 2x12, though I do not think that board is a good choice compared to the 32 or 64, for reasons such as spike protection, please see the FAQs here: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/arduino-codes-for-sabertooth-2x25-2x32-etc.137/

With respect to your questions keep in mind that 'best' is a relative term to the criteria by which it is judged.

    1) what is the best board today for value for money to replace the k8055 board?
That depends on design, intended hardware and budget. In terms of high powered almost turn key options, though at a cost, you can use modern aasd15 servos: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/motion4sim-6dof-aasd15-servo-motion-controller.392/
But on a budget you can go the DC route, please see the FAQs for options here: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/motor-drivers.11/category
    2) are there cheaper alternatives to sabertooh 2x12?
There are possible budget options such as the IBT2, but keep in mind member reported issues running them at 24v, which may relate to quality control: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/ibt2.371/
Other possibilities include the likes of the Cytron: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/cytron-md13s-for-smc3.358/
    3) why is xsim no longer used and simtools is preferred?
Xsimulator.net has the most active community, following a split of the community with Xsim many years ago, and the Xsimulator.net members utilise a range of motion software including SimTools and the likes of FlyPT, giving community members choice.

I'd like to try to switch from xsim to simtools, but I can't find trial options, I don't want to throw money away in case I have problems... is it possible that I can't try the software for a few days before buying it? also because I remember that in the past I had somehow downloaded the racing trim plugin, now I can't remember how to do it or if there is a download history

The demo version of SimTools includes the fully functional plugin for Live For Speed, specifically for testing purposes.

It is not a common hardware choice, but this may help regarding how @auryza used such hardware: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/velleman-k8055-stepper-motor-control.10536/

Economies of scale are part of it, but at the same time be aware that IBT2s are built down to a cost and some members report quality issues for motion sims, particularly running them at 24v. Reducing the voltage a little seems too make a positive difference to their susceptibility to damage, irrespective of their published specs.

Cloned Arduino's are generally pretty robust, though members have reported duds from time to time.
