I would like to build something along the lines of the desk racer by bsft and am looking at motors.
I figure I'll use the same ones from motion dynamics but am considering some really cheap ebay ones for testing so I don't destroy a perfectly good motor while I'm still unfamiliar with the way it all works.
The cheap ones I found are JGY370 worm drive 12v for $17.
With no load at 160 rpm the torque is .05Nm and stall at 0.2Nm.
When geared for 40rpm (no load) they are 0.2Nm and 0.8Nm stall torque.

So I figure the cheap ones won't be up to the task of driving the desk racer? Would they be enough for traction loss on a shoulder mount type rig?

I think you need to set your sights higher and look at motor specs that are known to work.

You are not likely to brick a motor, more likely that in the excitement of the moment you don't double check wiring and do something silly like burn a board. The electronics are far more delicate than motors.
