Started to research motors for a 6 DoF build. Looking at the cost of High W DC motors, looks like the costs are getting very close to SCN Linear Actuators. Would welcome any thoughts on which would be best path to go with or what I should consider in making my decision. Primary interest is in racing.

At the moment there is a bunch of members building their own DC powered Linear Actuators for 6DOF rigs.

Besides costs you need to compare torque and speed. SCN5 is fast enough for racing at 400mm second but lack enough torque at 15.4 ft. lbs. each (x 6) . SCN6-040 have enough torque but to slow imo at 200mm second. And those speeds are maximum so even slower when loaded.

Thanks Blazinh H can see the problem here.

Yes I have been following some of those posts. Unfortunately I don't have the skills/equipment to design and build my own LA. But if a member comes up with a design that they are willing to make and sell, well I might be interested in that. :grin

While using linear actuators is the best method for a 6dof you could start out with something less complicated and expensive to build by using motors with levers instead.
