    Hello Community

The Target is to create some new Video's for the Video Plugin, contains real g-forces, out of Rallye or Hillclimb Cars. There are some ways to do this with Professional loggers, but not realy cheap (1000Euros and more), so, its not the way

    http://www.instructables.com/id/Acceler ... rd-memory/
I have found this DIY Logger, but i have not the knowledge how to create this thing myself. Perhaps there is Anyone how can do this??? (Of course I'll spend the money for the pieces and something for the work!)

Feel free to contact me or post your ideas here

    Martin

I guess you would like to build a portable (most likely stand-alone) accelerometer-logger to take it with you in your rally race car, the race cars of your team members and fellow racers?

That way we could use this data to feed the X-Sim Video-Plugin with the cockpit-view videos you are capturing in the rally races you are driving, in order to move our simulators syncroniously to the videos.

If the final device would be small enough, we would be able to take it with us even in rollercoasters. Or perhaps someone could use such a device while driving in the Ring-Taxi with Sabine Schmitz on the famous Nürburgring racetrack, while flying in an sports airplane, or in a race-kart with a helmet cam.
There would be plenty of possiblities to produce action vids for our simulators!

That's a great idea, and I think it would be worth trying to work this out!

Yes of course - I have good connections to some guys who are placed in the top-ten of rally racing in Switzerland (also Daniel Dada Sieber, S1600), some circuit and hillclimb drivers, also connections to somone who is driving rallye-cross cars :D And near of my hometown there is a little airport where guys are making some air-acrobatic trainings , perhaps they would take the little accelerometer with them in their airplane

I cant wait to see some results :yippiee:

I found a better solution than DIY!!!!!

    Option1 (cheapest):
You can use a basic Logomatic Serial SD Datalogger from sparkfun for the datalogging... only $39.95
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=752

...and for sensors use this Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout - ADXL330 for $34.95 for simple 3DOF accelerometer (X, Y, Z axis)
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=692

    Option2 (Best):
You can use Logomatic v2 Serial SD Datalogger for $59.95
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... ts_id=8627

...and this advanced sensor board IMU 5 Degrees of Freedom for $109.95 to have measure all these axis: (Roll, Pitch, X, Y, Z)
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=741

My new moto: Why get in trouble building such complicate devices if already exist and they are cheap? :D

I agree, it's not worth to build it, if there is such a cheap option
Well, initially there has been a price of 1000Euro mentioned.
Martin should give it a try with the parts you've linked

I agreed with John (planmix) that this is the best solution for sensors to have them placed on the big 6DOF platform, for position feedback or as part of the auto tunning procedure.

Advanced sensor board IMU 5 Degrees of Freedom to measure all these axis: (Roll, Pitch, X, Y, Z)
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=741

...and Gyro Breakout Board - Dual Axis IDG300 to measure the Yaw axis that is missing from sensor board above...
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=698

That is to know that their use isn't limited to datalogging function only... ;D

But there's one thing not so good on these accelerometer: the measuring is only -+3g and this is not so very high. I think i will do a test version with this:

Logomatic v2 Serial SD Datalogger for $59.95
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... ts_id=8627

and for sensors use this Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout - MMA7260Q for simple 3DOF accelerometer (X, Y, Z axis)
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=252

    with selectable ranges (+/- 1.5, 2, 4, and 6g)

I havent found a sensor like the IMU5 with a better range for forces...

And is these correct that i dont need something else? (programmer is included onboard i think?)

    Hi Martin,

Yes the Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout - MMA7260Q is even better to use!

But it would be nice if you could record the rate of rotation of Bank, Pitch, Yaw axis! These data combined with X,Y,Z accelerations could be used in 6DOF platforms!!!

That's why you also need three Gyroscope inputs like for example by using two of these boards:
Gyro Breakout Board - Dual Axis IDG300
    http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=698

But the decision is yours in the end.

Just to mention that all these sensors, datalogger etc, are powered from 3.3v source. I suppose that you could power with a 3.7volts LIPO battery (from a nokia cellphone) the Logomatic v2 that has onboard regulator down to 3.3v, and share the 3.3v power to the sensors... This way you can have only one power source and the best its that you can charge the battery over USB!!!!

The Logomatic v2 device is pre-programmed ready to be used, but supports firmware upgrade over USB if needed!!!

Ok i have orderd the logger and the Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout (MMA7260Q).

First i will see how it works with the 3 axis and if the import to the video plug will work fine. If there is all ok i wanna order the pitch an roll sensor to complete the logger...

I hope i will post some results soon...

    Hi,

I don't know how these values can be imported to video plugin but I could easily import them to excel and represent them in graphical axis.

From the look of the data, you perhaps are holding the sensor in your hand and shaking it one axis at the time!

    logger_excel_import.gif

    LOF01.zip

Thanks for the photo too! It looks really small. Easy it can fit everywhere, or even mount it on a camera to follow its view!

BTW, what is the purpose of the DIP switches?

    Hello Thanos

I was shaking the sensor first to x then y and at least to z (By hand ;D )

the switches are to configure the G-level (1.5, 2, 4, 6 G) and i wasn't shure about the sleep mode so i have connected this signal also to the switches. It works very simple and without any
    problems...

    Thx, best regards,

The excel file is in the zip file on the above post!

I guess I was lucky on guessing the way these motion data was generated, right?
