Hi all. I got a box of motors from a friend containing a nema 34 stepper motor and a 250v RTA X plus B4 stepper driver.
My question is. Can i slap one of those quad encoders onto it and make it into a direct drive wheel?
I've tried to control steppers with simple rotary encoders and it couldn't really hold position that well. Skipping and jumping all over the place.
I've read that you'd need an encoder that has the same amount of steps as the motor has.
So would a quad encoder with 2000 position points work?

In Argentina there was a promotion of a dma860e and a nema 34 of 8Nm at 209U $ S. it is 10% of the value of an imported DD.

Unknowingly, I bought a my1020 and I am doing the DD with that motor, 2 ibt-2 and 2 12v 40A sources with an arduino leonardo and a 1000ppr encoder.

I really wanted to make the direct switch from ibt-2 and my1020 to dma860e and nema34. thinking that making the direct change and connecting the wiring where appropriate everything will work as well as with the other configuration.

Anyway, I feel inside that there is something I don't know and I feel that if I put the driver with the nema 34 it won't move.

1- can someone explain to me if changing the driver and motor without touching anything else does everything work?
2- the only limitation of the stepper motors is the sensation of the "click" when turning it?
3- when you say: "I've tried to control steppers with simple rotary encoders and it couldn't really hold position that well. Skipping and jumping all over the place."
What I understand is that you have no problems with the encoder and not with the driver and the stepper motor. Your problem is that the distance in degrees between "click" and "click" towards the encoder cannot go somewhere in between and therefore the steering wheel never stood still?

4- there are 2000 5000 drivers and up to 40,000 micro steps, is the problem 100% encoder or can it be corrected with the micro steps of the drivers?

4- what does the theory say to run a stepper motor? because the missing Australian had to make his own plate to make it walk and now we all want that plate and we can't get it? There are drivers for 100, 200 and 700 dollars, none of them work?

5- have you been able to advance in your project? Have you achieved any successful results since November to date?

thanks ... this is a thread can be very interesting.

Nope.. But i think the best way is to just buy a nema34 closed loop servo. They're not that expensive and with a lathe you can make your own qr system. wifi arduino for the buttons and your done. Buttons boxes I can make myself as well as shifters. Takes some work but its very feasible
