Just trying to find out what people who have surge think of it. Is it a good addition to your motion sim?

Braking and acceleration is what it represents, and with most racing games it gives gear force shifting up. Its a must!

I have used those linear rails on my rig @Boomslangnz, but have not yet hooked the arduino up but hope to the next time I tear the rig down, as I now have the power boards for the servos. Mine is unusual in that it is designed to move the controls to simulate surge, not the seat. It is experimental but the idea is that I can have a sustained surge like effect.

This gives you an idea of how the rails are mounted and how easily they move.

I do like the surge table on my rig, mine runs on dual rollers (like a rollercoaster) and driven by a chain drive (it was my first and current rig) really adds to the braking effect, but it would be better if I could get washout to work - (has gone from not working at all when selected to now in the latest version of simtools it just runs to the end stops?). But other people seem to have it working?

yes they seem to have different sizes of the bearing things so I figured bigger could be better with 30UU. What is the standard length for surge generally? like how far forward and backwards do they move generally?

When I built mine there were not much around to look at, so I just pick a size that would fit in my sim room (300mm movement). This seems to work OK and without a properly working washout (well for me anyway) any longer may get problematic, as it runs full speed back to center.

ok cool thanks. I think I may just end up having to buy a linear rail and trying it out.

Shop carefully @Boomslangnz, they can be horrendously expensive. I grabbed my pair of rails for a bargain at $52.00 AUD on Ebay, I have not seen them that cheap since.

@SeatTime sorry just wondering about your 300mm movement. Is that meaning 300mm movement in total or 300mm forward then another 300mm back to center

300mm total, as I have a traction loss table under that, so didn't have the room to go longer. Also the longer you go the more inertia you will build up, so your rig/drive system must be able to handle that.
