    My Motion Simulator:
    2DOF
    hi there,
i am hoping that someone can outline the basic components required to build a 2dof full motion race sim.
I understand the concept just need a little guidance getting started prior to putting too much time into it & realizing it is gonna cost the house.
really all i am looking for is the electronic components required & some recommended wiper motors as this is probably the road i will take (although i will look at electronic actuators). i understand that the uno & a motormonster are the cheaper option but is there others that are better for a slight price increase?
before someone starts to flame me I have looked through the forums & found so many different ideas that it is confusing as to what i need.
    any help is appreciated.
    cheers

Check my build. I was completely new to this and managed to finish a great working sim.

The only parts I personally will recommend to newbies are large worm gear motors which you will find links to throughout these forums. Too many problems to worry about with wiper motors.

Jrk 12v12 controllers. Costs a little more, but worth every penny and then some.

180 degree hall effect pots. Again, slightly more expensive than regular pots, but much better.

Electronics all together should cost you no more than $500 or so. The rest of my build was made of wood, ujoint, and nuts and bolts. About $200.

JRKS, big worm gear motors, and either hall effect pots or good quality wire wound 360 deg single turns. Yes it may cost a bit more, but the simplicity of setup and the outstanding performance of JRK is the way to go.
Look at the arduino threads in new posts, and how many there are. Then look for JRKS...........very few, why? They just work.
This combination rivals a SCN set up in motion and matches the wild performance of a Dbox.
This may not give the fine tactile vibration of a dbox, but nothing a bass shaker will not fix.
For a saving of maybe $50-$70 , its like having a turbo on your car or not. cost between 2 jrks and ard / hbridges.
As said @M1shap , there is a member here who is 86, (yes thats right) , has JRKS and big motors on a seat mover. He originally started with a K8055 and arduino and after battling for over 3 years not quite getting it right, I set him up with JRKS in less than an hour. He hasnt looked back. And at his age, time is precious. He now can enjoy his ride knowing it just works.

after doing some research & recommecndations i think that it is best to go with some quality gear so far i have selected the motors & the controllers see below:

    2 - 12V Worm drive motor 180RPM 20Nm code WORMDRV-G180-12 - $109 link
2 - Pololu Jrk 12v12 USB Motor Controller with Feedback - $99 link (thanks bsft)

my next question is what type of power supply & pots are going to get the job done that wont break the bank & also what type of U joint is recommended. I do intend to make a trip or ring around a few wreckers to find a cheap second hand U joint.
what i am trying to do is get a good picture as to what big ticket items i need to make this rig. the frame is incidental at this stage & by far the easiest part to make it is the electrical & mechanical side that i am trying to get sorted.
any help is appreciated at this stage & thanks to those kind enough to reply earlier.
PS soo much reading to do on this forum good thing work is quiet at the mo :)

cut down drive shaft to size from a read wheel driven vehicle is best, mine cost me $20 for a whole shaft, then I cut it to size and weld plates on the ends.

Power supply, either a car battery with charger, a 12v 20amo PSu in parallel with a car battery, and or 2 x 12-14v 40 amp psus, one per motors.
Power supply http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/500W-Uni...-/160787900607?ssPageName=ADME:X:eRTM:AU:1123 or cheaper LED power supply (cannot find the link)
Convert a server PSU http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-DL385..._Accessories_Parts&hash=item19e9a84e16&_uhb=1 , others have done this
    Pots,
    hall effect http://au.element14.com/bi-technolo...ll-0-2v-20v-to-10v-pin/dp/2319662?Ntt=2319662
    continuous single turn http://au.rs-online.com/web/p/potentiometers/1642661/
put him on the back of the motor shaft somehow, here I drilled a hole into the drive bolt, slotted pot shaft in, drilled a hole through bolt and shaft and used a bit of wire to hold it all together.

Do some googling on modding server power supplies. They can be had on ebay for about $15 each and are perfect for our purpose.

Finding your seat, I was strugling with the same problem. I googled around the world. Then I visited near cheap car parts dealer and found a perfect seat with easy prize tag. Go search your local supliers, not everything is found from the web!

@M1shap http://www.soldsmart.com.au/car-seats , these are comfortable and a good price. Even my 86 year old mate uses a recliner version on his seat mover.
I use the yellow one on desk racer. Its comfortable even after 2 hours use.

I looked on local car forums and found one within a couple of days. I got 2 Cobra bucket seats for £100 which is about $180 AU. I'll sell the spare and make most of my money back.
