i spoke to a guy last week who has tried a f1 sim

he explained it uses a pair of glasses to track your eye movements !

i am assuming this is making sure you are looking at the right part of the track when you are driving

but how do they track it ? i guess a small camera looking at each eye and following the pupils ?

General gaze tracking has been around for a while and basically relates to the general area that is being looked at, often represented like a heat map.

But for VR what is needed is robust super accurate pupil tracking to enable foveated rendering, as that greatly reduces the resources needed as only the bit that is being focussed on needs to be rendered in high resolution. It is difficult because the pupil shape varies significantly between people from different parts of the world and also changes when your eyes are subjected to fast movement forces.

Generally they are using very fast 250Hz cameras, like the SMI units Nvidia has been working with.
