Literally just stumbled on a sim at a party in San Fran. To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with the motion. Is that generally regarded As a good sim?

hard to say. If its a hire unit, good chance its had its motion set down to avoid damage. If its a personal sim, maybe the user hasnt got the profiles right yet.
They do use SCN5 actuators and usually are good depending on profile set. I am going to test some simx units myself soon at a go kart place once I get time Although a bloke I know saw them in action and reckons the motion is crap. Mind you, he has tested my dc motor sims.
I have been on commercial dbox and the motion was turned down so low I thought it was off. But that was set for longevity of the system.
Mind you, I have a mate with a dbox I really must give a run as it looks like he has got it running well.
He did try both my dc motor sims, seat mover and full frame and says they have more solid motion, but not the tactile of a dbox actautor.
SCN are costly compared to dc motors.

The range of motion was pretty good but it did not seem to be very in sync with the game ( rfactor 2). It was good fun but I guess my expectations were higher for a professional unit like this.

could be the simcommander software, it originates from "other" software and unless I am mistaken, it runs at 40 ms, unlike simtools running at 20 ms.
Dunno really, profiles can really throw things out as well.
    Were they hire units?

I think it was a hire unit. There was a guy there operating it. The pedals were adjustable, which was a nice touch I think! It was also setup for fully automatic so I think they may have been part of the lack of realism.

Thats the problem is with the software, not rfactor2 works lovely on SimTools, lol.
We produce very simular speeds of motion with our 12dc sims running Jrks that are a 1/3 of the cost and far stronger too. Scn5 sims are nothing new and setup wrong can be a nightmare. But the expense is not needed to have the same fun, leaves more money for wheels , screens and all the toys that go with them.

12vdc sim's running Jrks don't have whinny scn5 actuator noise right behind their head either.

True, I am still getting used to the noise of my actuators behind me after being in near silence with dc motors.

I don't like wearing headphones myself but mounting some speakers right next to your ears can drown out quite a bit of unwanted noise. As you start loosing your hearing, it works even better!

good idea, but I game 90% of time with headphones on anyway. I just fix the chat settings so it only reacts when I speak or hit a BIG bump.

One of these days maybe I should try some of them there fancy headphones too! I guess I'm paranoid myself because with headphones on, I'm thinking someone could just walk up behind me, slit my throat, and I wouldn't even see or hear it coming. Can you set them to react only when someone is sneaking up on you? :)

ps Hey @RaceRay , Where is the paranoid emoticon? I willing to contribute if necessary.

@patrick Nguyen , the longer the software takes to react, the slower the actual motion. As said, unless I am mistaken, simcommander is slower. I know that x-sim software *vomits* is definitely slower than simtools. I can feel the difference.

but i'm confuse ,x-sim and simtools are not the same software ? and before i'm getting to involve . is simtools compatible with iracing API?
    Regards pat

@patrick Nguyen we could even convert your simcommander unit to SimTools too , easily and the amount of games it will be able to run will more than double, thats the bonus.

Yes one Adapter for each SCN6 is needed and set them to indivisual IDs and you can then start to set them up in SimTools, @yobuddy has the technical answers for you. Aswell check out this too , http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/seppels-scn5-rig-german.5084/ where SCN's were used and tested, to a very nice result. @seppel did a real nice job of his unit.
