May be the Occupation field in the personal details of the member is enough to express what some one is doing for a living and maybe a Manager ... but every one has his other talented hobby or a craftsmanship to do ... if it's not his master daily job .

Presenting that as small icon beside the Avatar of each user as : Mechanics, Tailor, Carpenter, Metal Welder ,Teacher , Programmer ... etc.

    1.jpg 3.jpg 2.jpg
    9.jpg 10.jpg binary.jpg

so every one can be known by a hobby or two in front of all of us to pm and ask hem directly if help is needed .

And one point to add ... That option is not an easy one ... Let's integrate it as bonus point when The member comes to a certain No. of ratings and threads opened ... then to let him choose what would his craftsmanship/hoppy Icon would be ... like Trophy

So new members with the same hobby Know ... How is the Boss here in same field ?... with another 4 or 5 stars beside the icon to be rated by other members to make him grow in his hobby career ...
Which he might be the New Boss :thumbs
Mine is @yobuddy :thumbs for ever .

The idea is great and i looked for a similar xenforo addon (xenforo is our forums system name) at http://xenforo.com/community/resources/categories/users-profiles.24/
but i did not find anything. Unfortunately currently my spare time is too limited to create such an addon completely from scratch.
Maybe i did not look well enough. If you find any addon which is useable as a starting point i see what i can do.

    @RaceRay
There is an addon XenMoods (on last page) for displaying user mood banner in his profile, this addon can be easily adjusted to use as 'hobby' addon and change those mood banners to into 'proffesion' banners.

The addon has option to add or delete banners, option where to display banners and also permissions which users can use them, so basically the things that were disussed above. For example only well known members can set-up banners, 'green' users can't until they reach certain level.

For esthetic reasons it will be nice that all banners use similar design and sizes, only images and art on them changed to suit the look of the hobby / profession.

It can be done with a little bit of patience :)

For starters users here can write their ideas for banner names, like 'Electrician', 'Mechanic', 'SimGuru', 'Coder', 'Arduino Professor' etc etc..

    Great find! http://xenforo.com/community/resources/xenmoods.10/

This are one of my most popular icon set: http://icons8.com/

So if someone is defining the professions and select the suitable icons therefore, i will integrate the addon to our site!

Please not say: Use the icon XY for "electrician", rather than download the specific icons, rename them and upload it all together in a zip file for me.
So i see at a glance which category it belongs to and i can create the badges/buttons.

E.g: The icon for the profession "Electrician" must be called than electrician.png

Otherwise i will not try to find your desired icons within a set of 1200+. No, i definitely refuse that:)

What width to use for badge/icon, the same as avatar, 96px? or maybe to go with 100px wide, something like 100x25 px, simple badge with icon on the left and text on the right to it. I could find some time to create those badges, but it would be very helpful to me to have a list of professions which members would like to use, so I can save time with searching.

Total size for the button is 110x50

its just an example psd file attached.

If you have better design skills please feel free to do some graphical experiment - tabularasa:)
For me i wish any administrator or programming icon for coding skills.

I suggest every one looks for his desired icon and post it here.
    This could be mine:

@RaceRay Yea, I have experience with CSS sprites, although haven't use them on sites for longer time, not because I was avoiding them, I didn't have need to do it. Otherwise, using sprites is a no-brainer. I have experience with html coding, css styles, some of the php coding/editing too, I'm familiar with web design overall.

How did you thought to use that badges as a sprite?

Ok i thought the addon would support sprites, but it doesnt..mhh sad. But should be not problem when we do not create hundreds of different icons:)
