    Hi,

This is not a project yet, but I would like to discuss this idea: Can we get IMU data (gyro and accelerometer) from a drone, RC car etc. and use it to move a motion simulator?

There has been this thread about this by @benj, but I am not sure if anything came out of it.
(Cannot post links, search for FPV drone racing)

Then there are these people at VRMotion.rocks (thanks to @SeatTime for the hint) . They do exactly that, but they are just getting started it seems.

My question: How can we do this with SimTools? I suppose the IMU data would replace the input from a computer game. What is the typical data sent by the game? How can I build a new plugin for SimTools? And of course: How difficult will that be for an average programmer?

    Thanks,
    Nic

Simtools 2.0 is currently in closed beta testing: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/simtools-2-0-question-and-answer.8175/

One of the planned enhancements is a Video Ride Player/Creator and there have been some ideas thrown around regarding how best to record motion. One idea being researched is to use a mobile phone as the motion recording input device. I would think that would work equally well for a drone.

    Thanks @noorbeast, that's good news!

But maybe we can already build an IMU plugin for the current Simtools.

How is Simtools developed? Do you have a small development team, or is it open source?

Exactly what I was looking for! Seems almost straight forward. I'd imagine one should hook up the IMU to some system that filters the raw data and packs them into UDP packets.

One more question: Since my building skills are much worse than my programming skills, I might go for a commercial motion simulator. Are there motion simulator out there that work with SimTools?

Hi, was my question on commercial motion simulators the wrong question? I realize most community members are building their own motion simulator. Does that mean that SimTools is not intended to be used with commercial simulators?

    Thanks,
    nic

There have been a number of commercial entities that have used the current version of SimTool without first negotiating a commercial license. That has led to a far more detailed license regime for SimTools 2.0, which has license options for commercial entities wanting to use SimTools with their product and for users to license SimTools for a commercial rig they may have purchased: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/simtools-2-0-question-and-answer.8175/#post-99841
