    Hi all,
I'm relatively new to the forums but I have been lurking about for a while gleaning what I can. I'm finally getting close to starting a project I think and I wanted to get some feedback from you guys on some motors that I have been considering.

I know the popular thing is for Wiper Motors, but it seems like that's really over-driving what those were built for. I'm thinking of using winch motors but with the limited number of projects it seems tough to figure out how well these will work. My main design plan at the moment is a seat mover or possibly Frex design. I don't plan on moving the display.

I'm looking at some ATV winch motors that have a planetary gear drive with a rated capacity of 2000 lb. I can get this for <$70 a piece. The motors are 12v, 1 hp, and have a 1st layer line speed of 13 fpm without a load with a 10 amp draw. The gear ratio is 153:1

I'm leaning towards the AVR motion controller and H-Bridge setup described here.

Here is my basic line of thought and hopefully I did my math right...with the specs above and without modification the motor should operate around 40 rpm as-is. With a 1 hp motor at 40 RPM you should end up with about 130 ft-lbs of torque (~178 Nm) so more than enough force to move the sim and should be quick to respond.

Am I crazy to think this way? Am I missing anything obvious? Hopefully my math isn't too far off because I'm scratching it down while writing this post....

Any comments are appreciated and please keep up the good work, this is tons of fun.

Hello and welcome, 40rpm may be a bit slow, most wipers run between 50-60rpm.
Looks like it will have the force to move you though.

Hi Thanks bsft I was kind of thinking along the same lines. Do the wiper motors slow down under load though? I'm wondering if the actual time to move the sim would be comparable because of the torque difference and I should be able to run at 24V to accelerate it too. Just some thoughts.

By the way, I really like your designs and you often seem to have some of the most useful posts on here so just wanted to give a big thanks. We'll see where this design goes.

I have one of the 2000 lbs planetary winches, a T-max. Unloaded it's slightly faster than the boat winches many people are using, and it's very compact, but it's also very noisy. The gear train growls like an angry animal. :) I'.. probably sell mine to a friend and will use boat winches.

The motors I use spin at 140 rpm unloaded. I am not sure under load, but I'd guess at least 100rpm.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbN8XF02 ... ature=plcp they seem to move well.
