Right, I have decided to just jump in and get cracking with a sample layout just for sizing and scheming...general layout and stuff.

I know it looks horrible and all boxy, but hey some extrusion allows for fast and simple sizing, and also gives great flexibiltiy for adjustments.

Once the position is nailed down and dynamics sorted, then tubular framework with brackets is all very easy to add in down the line.

So here we go.... I can add dimensions if anybody wants to check it out.

This actuator low chassis can do!
Will there have to perform and drive information?

Yeah, I have been in touch with them...and commerically you do need an initial quantity order - I can't seem to lay my hands on any units as a individual set. So as this is just going to be a test bed for my own little play room, then I am looking at alternatives for now. As I am pretty sure the SimTools app will allow me to talk to other actuators - it is just finding the right ones now - somehwere between 100-200mm stoke, with enough grunt to take the payload, and speed for them to be effective. Hey, this is still a DIY rig...so I am going to still need lots of help. Just because I can operate a bit of shonky 3D CAD shoftware does not mean I know what I am doing here!!

So far I have ordered and received all Fanatec kit, so have the BMW Wheel, cabron black F1 wheel, H and SQ shifter. I was hoping that by now I could of gotten my hands on the V2 wheel base and pedals...but no such luck. I have had to reach out into the digital universe and grab a set of V1 pedals for now - ProtoSimTech ones will be here in the coming months if Chris can grow another few arms and ramp up production. Still on the lookout for the V2 wheel base as all the DD ones are just a tad on the expensive side right now, especially as everything else has been bought at the same time. Upgrades or replacements will happen as and when, and of course if needed.

The screen has been ordered, manufactured and just needs to be shipped and built...so slowly it is all coming together nicely.

I will update a bit more in the next few weeks when the actual real life build gets underway!

well the idea is that with the 3 DOF system, I can then raise the base up a little and put in a 4th DOF for the traction loss (oversteer/understeer)... I am not looking for any additional movements...but I am interested in building it up slowly and seeing what part of the visual/vestibular systems are triggered the most. As with having such a large immsersive screen (it is also 3D capable - but don't plan on using that part for a driving sim) some of the motion cues will be able to fool your brain whether you are sat on a motion rig or not... example being the Oculus rift stuff sat on a chair.

Slowly slowly....one step at a time. But I will give feedback along the way.

Just be aware that actuators that have both the load capacity and necessary speed for a simulator are also likely to be very expensive.

For starters I have been looking at the SCN6's...as these are tried and tested thanks to the community here...or maybe the SCN5's? A cheaper starting alternative than D-Box or industrial suppliers like Beckhoff or Bosche Rexroth..

No doubt about it I am going to need to lean you your collective experiences to get this working.

@nclabs can you advise on SCN6 for this set up.
@Ministrinity can you advise on Dbox costing and setup, and also give your opinion from driving my DC rigs, granted it was ages ago
@Caveman , you are looking at an expensive build first up, considering a 2DOF balanced point seat mover or full frame with large DC motors and JRKS can be done for about $800 ish.

As someone replied, nobody knows if SCN6s can stand that job. Nobody dared to buy 4 of those to try mimic the dbox kind of simulator. It can work (maybe with the 50 kg version) but it can break as well. There is only one way to know it. I'm here for any requested advice.

A little bit of an update...I now have all the Fanatec parts I need apart from teh V3 pedals, which are on pre-order. I have a set of V1 pedals for now though.

The aluminium extrusion for the rig is also here, along with my wrap around screen.

    Let the build commence.

boy oh boy I haven't been on here for a while....

I haven't had much time to progress the seat rig - so it is still static for now. I have finished the visuals (apart from a minor graphics correction) so at least I can share that with you all...

Now the focus is back on the seat, and I am torn between which way to go. Seat shaker or full rig mover? I am also torn between how many DOF I would like. My optimum is, pitch, roll and yaw (traction loss)....but I would also like heave for the jumps. But add those up and I would need 5 actuators...so why not buy 1 more and do a full 6 DOF stweart platofrm? Or get rid of heave and go with just 3 actuators as a starting point?

Any tips on which way or any body tried both to advise which one feels more realistic? I am skeptical of the seat shaker, just because the other parts of the rig don't move...but some of the set ups look very nice indeed.

Onto the bit that is done, the visuals.

It is a triple projection curved screen - curved in both H and V axis - so it is 180x45 degree section of a pure sphere. 3x WU projectors running at 120Hz. Currently only set up for iRacing and it isn't meant as a pure racing sim...it just so happen I can use it for that so yes I know it is a little larger than normal...but only just. My other systems for racing teams are about this size but they have full blown hexapods under the cockpit so need the space.

Pic 2 - Content needs a tweak but is in the hands of tech support to help correct the viewing frustums....the desktop warp is all good so I know it is not that.

    Nice, IMPRESSIVE SCREEN!
Makes my single 120" screen poo now!
I wouldn't be put off by a seat shaker, a lot of professionals prefer this design other full frame.
I am currently about to build my 2dof seat mover. I have the scn5's x 2 and the simxperience rear damper kit to hold them. I went for this solution after reading for at least a year on these forums.
If you read up on how a seat mover effects the body and your muscle tension, it all starts sounding like the better option, and is perhaps different to how you think it works in your head (or at least my head). I have too often read people confused thinking the seat is supposed to mimic the car seat, and often they don't understand why your seat and pedals would change/move independently.
I realised a long time ago that you can not create anything realistic and got over it. Now i understand its about having as many things to worry about, feel, and engage with as with the real world, and dial those senses in to your brain to give you the ultimate trick and pleasure of real racing in your home!
I see it as a foreign language to learn if you like, Hello / Bonjour - its the same but different ;)

Agreed...but unfortunately to be able to judge which is best then one needs to be able to test both. Unfortunately I am not in that position, I have only ever been in full rig motion platforms with the job I have...so that is why I am leaning towards that solution for my own rig. I have seen a Frex seat shaker, but didn't have a chance to test it.

I guess with a headset like the Vive or Rift, then a seat shaker would be quite good...but being able to see your cockpit would put me off this even if the muscle memory functions are similar.

    There is time yet.

Also depends on use. I am purely a sim racer, who will use for flight sim because one can.
Everything I said was it bit narrow minded, from my stand point, on my goal.

I heard a seat shaker isn't the best for flight sim, but because of my goal I didn't read to far into it.

But like you, I am excited either way. Motion will be good, in fact amazing!
I will be watching this space. Looks like an amazing project!

Not narrow minded...it is the best solution for your neeeds...doesn't have to cater for anybody else.

I get to do these things for a living, so the visuals are easy for me to do. Not so the motion bases as usually there are others that do that part, so I only have to integrate with them. But like I said, the only platforms I have experienced are the full on 6 DOF hexapod. I can't afford those, so a simple rig is my first step into all things motion.
