Question Pot on a motor shaft?

    While looking at the other project I have noticed that pot is usually connected to the gearbox output shaft. Wouldn't it be better to connect it directly to the motor shaft to have better movement resolution?

    I've removed the brake and now have shaft sticking for 10mm at the back of the motor. Thinking about connecting 3600-degree hall pot there. My main concern is if the engine speed of 3000 rpm wouldn't kill the pot.

    What do you think guys?

    you can use an encoder for this instead of a pot. how do you plan on implementing the motor on your rig? lever, actuator or other?

    My knowledge in electronics is quite limited. I'm planning on using Arduino with BTS7960B motor drivers and SMC3. I believe encoder would complicate things for me.
    The movement of the rig will be performed by the lever.

    If you are using a lever, I think an encoder might even be a step backwards in resolution. It would depend on how many positions it has and the angle over which you would be moving. Most here will use pots or Hall sensors on setups with output arms.

    Thanos has a Kickstarter thread here where he mentions a cool circuit for encoders. Encoders are generally used where you have something turning lots like a linear actuator though there has also been interest in other straight line sensing methods.
