    Hi all,
I'm a retired teacher and muso In Tasmania, Australia who's into flight sims and rc model airplanes these days. I had a PPL, mainly flying gliders, but had to hand it in due medical issues some years ago. Just getting into designing and building my own motion rig for Flight Sim 2020. I have experience with building astronomical telescope mounts many years ago so the fabrication part is OK for me, I just need to learn what components work best etc. I'll start off with 2 degrees of freedom with the 3rd degree as an option in the design for later. Anyway, glad to be here and learn from the community. :)

I'm in Hobart @noorbeast! I noticed your Tassie Devil avatar and wondered if you were actually from Tassie.

I was inspired to build a motion simulator by a thread by @Ronan Design on the Microsoft Flight Sim official VR forums. I believe he's posted his project on here as well.

Right now I'm searching for decent motors at a reasonable price, as the one @Ronan Design used are out of stock and come from Canada. I found some that looked to have the correct specs but the postage charge was insane. :(

Thanks for all the links and stuff, I'm still doing a lot of reading. Great site. :)

You can find @Ronan Design's build thread here: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...-rig-msfs-smc3-flypt-mover-transducers.16245/

In Australia Motion Dynamics is the go to place for motors and we are spoiled for choices, as they carry many different spec industrial motors, plus the cheaper 200W option, as well as spares.

Motor selection and specs required depends a lot on the design Vs physics, have a play with SimCalc and/or Motion Vizualiser to help get your head around the tradeoffs.

As an aside the avatar was made by a person on Reddit to represent the role I played in convincing Facebook to reverse its decision about not releasing the original Rift HMD in Tassie, which it eventually did do.

Hey, I have my own thread already, neat. Re motors, I was looking at the build threads you linked to and noticed yours, which I have been reading avidly. Seriously nice work, man. The sub woofer in the support column was very clever. Anyway yeah, I looked up the motor supplier and you are right, we are spoiled for choice. Also of interest with your build was the use of high toque servos from HobbyKing, I have spent thousands there over the last ten years building all sorts of rc planes, gliders and racing mini quads. I fly through FPV goggles so VR with the G2 headset is a natural for me on flight sims.

Anyhow, I like your design a lot and may use that as a starting point for my rig, although I'll use steel, as aluminium is way pricey here.

My rig has been adapted and changed over time.

I no longer use the servos as the heave knee travels through an arc and can provide subtle surge cues, I will update my thread at some stage but my rig is currently being set up in the home office and a bigger sub (seen in the background) will be incorporated into a yet to be build under desk hung pedal mount, a 49" curved monitor is also about to be ordered, under desk cable management is still a WIP until those are done:

Yeah, this is the one I want to get printed (I don't have a 3D printer). For the Spittie's throttle I just use my Logitech quadrant on the left hand side, as I do for the excellent AS 33 ME electric powered competition racing glider that's available for free from flightsim.to

Good day today, went out to Uptons salvage in Cambridge and sourced my steel for the base section (they cut to size, including for mitre joints, so that's a plus) sourced a uni joint with a local car wreckers and then started sketching out the basic design. One plus is that the Ferrari PC seat I'm using has strong alloy fold down arms that I can mod to hold a sidestick and a ball mouse on one side and the other for my cheapo Logitech throttle quadrant, leaving a removable central pedestal for my Alpha yoke and Bravo throttle quadrant when needed (or a race wheel if I so choose). I mainly like to fly with stick and simple throttle, so that may be all I need most of the time. Even for gliders I'm happy to have a sidestick instead of a central one without ruining the immersion. For the Spitfire, I will go for a realistic central one eventually.
