I'm researching for my next sim (4dof/6dof) and I have to take a decision about how to power it.
It is cheaper for me to get 1 or 2 100amp gel car batteries and a charger, than to get 4 or 6 server power supplies, as I will be using 750watts winch motors that can be powered on 12v or 24v.

1-I have no experience using car batteries, is there something that I have to know about them? or I just can connect them to the motors directly?

2-Still deciding if running 12v or 24v, @24v with 2 batteries in series and IBT-2 bridges or @12v with dual MM's. Any pros and cons?

    Thanks anyway!

Do you not need to regulate the power supply. a car battery can kick out 14v which could ruin some equipment. I Know with scn's you have to have protection from over voltage

not much help im affraid on the battery side but some of the power supply units are regulated voltage so you cant put too much power out. i wouldn't have a clue how to do it on batteries. it would probably be created with resistors some how. If it were me i would use power supplies to be on the safe side. the last thing i would want is something going bang. Also for piece of mind

@crammy you're right, but it is just a question of money, I can't get cheap server psus here, and I can't legally import psu (weird legislation).
About the voltage spikes, I think that if I use for example the IBT-2 drivers ( 6V-27V) would be no problems, anyway, if there is some kind of cheap regulator that would be great.
Iirc @Pit use or used Bateries in his sim, I would have to ask him.

No problem mate. I had the same here. The power supplies I wanted as was going to get were relatively cheap. I never purchased at the time and when I went back to buy them a few weeks later they were all of a sudden non UK compliant and illegal to sell to me so had to spend twice as much.
I'm sure it can be done with the knowledge. Yours may not even need regulating. I just knows scn's do.
