    Hi my names Dave.

I've been a gamer for years and into RC planes and helis also.

My plans are to build the joyrider (i bought the plans) then I want to build a bigger one made from metal ,motorized that can do full 360 degrees on both axis.. Not sure if this has been done before or if even possible but I'm going to give it a shot.

Still haven't had a look at the x-sim software yet but for flying planes I only need to get the pitch and roll form the simulator and transfer that to the motors. unsure if x-sim can do that or not but I can easy get the info from the simulator as reverse engineering has been a hobby of mine for the last 10 years. I started hacking multiplayer games like call of duty etc.

So I know I can get the data and plan is to build a larger frame for the joyrider so it can do full 360 then change the bearing setup and have a bar coming out of the frame with a cog on it then to a chain and motor..

I will have lots of questions so hopefully this forum will be much help to me.

    Thanks for listening

    Dave

    Welcome to the X-simulator community!

    Welcome to the X-simulator community!
Hope we can Assist in developing your Idea for your Simulator (360).
This has been accomplished in the past and can be duplicated with a lot of testing a safety of course!

For Motors, Servo motors would do the trick! (1.5 Kw +).
you can also go with Hydraulics (expensive).

Do some research and ask around the Forum, to give you a preliminary Idea and more or less cost.

    Hello All,

I am Jeff from New Hampshire, USA. My simulator interest is with helicopters. Based off of X-Plane 10, I am looking to build a motion platform that will give me pitch and roll with maybe yaw depending on cost and difficulty. I am also thinking I would like to simulate the point of lift off.

I have been bouncing around the site and have determined if I can't find what I am looking for here, I probably don't need it. What I do need is to sift through the wealth of information and experience, pick a design, and start assembling.

My thoughts are to use a metal frame. I have an automotive drive shaft with 41 degrees of travel for pitch and roll. Popping a front axle on top would give me yaw. And the axle is a slip joint which might give me the point of lift off I am looking for. I am still researching actuators and simulator interfaces.

About me, I have a fair electro-mechanical background. I maintain all my own toys. I even stripped a 76 Triumph Spitfire down to the frame and restored it. However I have never built a motion simulator before so there is a lot I can learn from folks that have already been there.

So Thank you having me on your site and I look forward to working with some of you.

    Jeff

Well dont fall over Rene, Im back after been knifed in the throat by you know who over at xsim3, oops sorry for swearing wont mention them again, Im back with a lot more to offer here on site.
If required I can start on documents for Jrk use in the old software and will support any information needed on the new one too.
I have a 6 page dashboard on the UNO for under $20 to make as well i have bettered my little rc sim model, moves alot nicer now.

    Well gday and Im back.

    Hi everyone,
I'm Nathan. I've been interested in basically all types of flight sims for a number of years now, as well as some racing sims.
Anyways the thought of building a motion simulator has been floating around in my head for a while. I stumbled upon this site and it seems like a really good place to assimilate a lot of information as well as get answers to the many questions I am going to have, as I am basically brand new to this.
My ultimate goal is to build a sim with full 360 degree motion on both the pitch and roll axis, although that seems like an overly ambitious place to start, so I'll likely try to start with something simpler.
Anyways any advice/info on materials, cost, software etc. would be very much appreciated(I have a lot of questions).
    Thanks for reading!
    Nathan

hello and welcome , a few people are looking something along the lines of a 360 deg sim, but these link are for more complicated setups
    viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4520&p=43340&hilit=#43340
    viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4563&p=43339&hilit=#43339

I recall seeing a 360 deg style 2 DOF somewhere.
I guess it would require 360 deg encoders, 240v and motor chain gearbox set up to achieve this. Expect expensive.
A suggestion would be to start with something like this http://www.acesim.com/main.html
with motors like this on each corner of the respective axis http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-d ... orque.html or ebay equivalent.
    2 control boards http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1393
A frame like this would be relatively cheap and give you nearly 45 deg of angle, and you could use it for both race and flight.

I think this is the 2DOF project you were referring to: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/c ... 386740.stm

Yeah and I'll look into that frame thanks for your help :)

thats the sucker. the pc and power supply, probably a battery is mounted underneath.
For something like that, expect expensive for sure.

Either that or he's using slip rings for the wiring; either way it's pretty complicated.

    Hey there

Name is Aaron, from Melbourne, programmer. Getting into electronics via Arduino, very much interested in doing mechatronic projects. No idea how I stumbled across this site but am very, very happy to do so. Was close to starting my own sim development and am pleased to find some experience and knowledge for me to partake in already.

Keen to do the project still, but looking to get up to speed on all the options and what not first.

And I don't really even play games. I enjoy programming too much heheh.

Good to see some Aussies on the forum (was lurking pre-activation).

My idea for a sim was to replicate what DBox do (vertically oriented linear actuators at 4 corners of a platform), coz it seems kinda simple and doable. Welcome any input on that plan.

Any idea what sort of actuator speed is recommended for realistic simming? 50mm/sec? 100mm/sec? 150mm/sec?

    Cheers.

Hello and Welcome, I am in Sydney and Eaorobbie is in WA.
Short story long, Rob can advise on ard.
For actuators, best use 12v motors.
If you are going like a 4DOF dbox, you could use 4 x 12v boat winch motors as they have enough lift, or a calculated srping underneath the centre to support weight and 4 x 12v 200w big worm gear motors.
Speed wise depends on lever and motor use, but normally 150mm per second is snappy.
Ask as you need to and or start a new thread.
    Cheers, David - BSFT.

    Thanks Dave

The actuators are really the crux of the problem, for me. In particular, where to get them!!?

12V boat winch motors or 12V 200W big worm gear motors - where are they sourced? I did some searches for golf cart motors, etc, but it's slim pickings.

This is the newbie intro thread, so I might start one of my own.

too big, the one I know of is a 900kg unit, and the video you show is of eaorobbie, a member her with great knowledge.
For sheer lift, thats more the type of motor to use.
And yes, please start a new thread.

It's getting REALLY annoying having to login every time I visit the forum, even though I check the [ ] Log me in automatically checkbox each time. Is there some magic fairy dust I can sprinkle on the forum to make it work like the other forums I connect to?

    Cheers

I am using Firefox. When I went to portal.php, I got redirected to ucp.php?mode=login, so I am not sure how I can try both login forms.

I am a web developer, feel free to get tech.
