Hello everyone, my name is Joaquin, I'm from Spain.
I'm starting on this and by chance I found this page with some interesting content.
I love electronics and I have come to build me a cnc milling machine.
I hope to contribute something as well as get ideas on the forum.
I'm using a translator maybe not too clear what I write, I'm sorry.

    Hey guys
I'm living in Brisbane, Australia and got into sim racing using proper gear just about a year ago. I was so fortunate to get the opportunity to try out a diy motion rig simxperience style with rear traction loss module. It was an amazing experience and I decided to built a motion rig like that myself. This site got recommended by a mate of mine so I thought I might join this as well...otherwise I'm on ISR.
Here some pics of my current rig:
    P1000180.JPG
    P1000295.JPG
    P1000296.JPG
Got some CST F1's as well, but they don't fit in there unfortunately.

    Greetings from Brissie

Still don't really understand how this site works. Is everything in english in here or is there some content in german as well?

There is mate , what would like to know, a couple of us are local to Australia and are willing to help in anyway possible.
Drop us a line on Skype and we can begin to build you a motion sim.

    Hi,
my name is Dieter. I'm originally from Ghent, Belgium but I moved to NYC (where I work as backend engineer for vimeo.com)

I love the thrills of sticking to your seat due to inertia as you accelerate with a sports car, and the opposite on strong breaking, and I'm interested in replicating this feel in a safer, cheaper, and more convenient (my garage!) manner.
I'm a decent programmer and an industrial engineer by education (so I remember some physics classes) but not very handy and know little about mechanics (even though i had classes about that too) so I'm more looking for a kit with instructions, instead of having to worry about hardware and such.
My (probably naive) first estimate would be that if i had a seat that could rotate 90degrees backwards and forwards, I could mimic 1G of acceleration and breaking force respectively. (though switching between those positions would expose the body to some upwards centrifugal forces which don't happen in a real car) I looked up and found out that 1G should cover most cases (i.e. even accelerating hard in some of the fastest cars) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fa ... celeration).
I was somewhat surprised though that most sims I've seen here don't really go as deep as i thought they would, probably to save cost but I suspect this makes the experienced forces much weaker than they would be in a real (super)car?
I'm also seeing a lot of terms here and I'm not yet familiar with :) i'll need to find a primer/introduction article somewhere.
any thoughts, pointers, advice would be appreciated, thanks!

PS: using something like oculus rift instead of screens would make a game so much more immersive, make the sim simpler and lighter! would love to play with that too :)

    Dieter

    Gday Dieter,

We don't simulated the exact g force, sims like that would take many of thousands of dollars to build, as well become quite dangerous if they got out of control, or if the 240v system goes stupid and livens the the whole frame in 240v, fry time since most are steel.

So what we do is drive the sims with 12v and simulate the approx. movement coming from the plugin, the big worm gear units a lot of people use these days, can pack a hell of a punch, mu seat mover can move from its max to it s min setting in under .1sec this is rather un nerving and can fool the brain, and that's what its all about, fooling ya brain that you just experienced a high G. Its very convincing. And a lot of fun, and done right quite cheap, my units is $830 to build and the cheapest chinese unit is way more , 2.5k. And uses useless wiper that will eventually chew themselves out.

The ocilus rift would no be a good idea in a sim too me as the sim movement affects it badly (head tracking), plus you have to race with feel , you cant see the wheel or the pedals or ya gear stick. Mainly designed for FPS style games.
    Just my point of view.

When ya ready to start seriously looking to build a sim, start you own post where we can advise and answer any question that may arise, we here are very free with our info, (hide nothing, don't charge for it either) , Its our hobby, and for I just love to chat about it any time, even on Skype to the wee hours of the morning most nights.

Again Welcome, what would ya like to know.

    Hi Dieter,

welcome here! :) The oculus rift is great. I had been one of the early adopters for the oculus and tested it a lot. It´s nice and immersive to drive with the rift on your eyes. but personally i don´t like the low resolution and as long as a game is not dedicated to the rift system it´s very difficult and uncomfortable to use it for race cars. IMHO the biggest issues is the not proper adjusted HUD and on screen gauges for RPM and shift light, etc. I hope that the new high resolution rift fixes the issues and that most games support it native.

    Have a nice time here:)

(Btw. i love vimeo...it´s much better than youtube;))

what do you mean with useless wiper? so it looks like a bunch of simulators uses the motors of car windshield wipers, can you just go to junkyards and get them or is it better to buy new ones? any recommendations?
do you have any pointers to tutorials or reference projects ? i see there's so many different projects with different specs and approaches, and it's hard to understand the pros/cons of all.
    how about http://www.x-simulator.de/wiki/Joyrider ... y_TronicGr or http://www.x-simulator.de/wiki/Racing_S ... y_Mr.Burns ?

    thanks,
    Dieter

Nothing wrong with wipers, most of us started with them, and some still use them. But under some circumstances, they can get the gearing inside chewed out.
Rob only mention bigger worm gear motors as they are relatively cheap, about $100 each, 3-4 times faster at the shaft than wipers, wipers 50-60 rpm, big motors 140-180 rpm, and the big motors are a heck of a lot stronger in the gearing. Heres the link to the Australian supplier http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-d ... orque.html or look for a dayton equivalent on ebay.
I used to use wipers, but since going to big motors, I have never looked back.
As for the links, Tronic uses wipers on a pulley system and good for flight, but a bit slow for racing and it doesnt really replicate the violent bumps that can be got from car racing.

Mr Burns thread is using SCN5 actuators, not comparable with wipers, but motion is comparable with big worm gear motors.
As for projects, dig through the threads, we could point you to heaps, but you really need to search for yourself .
Although, heres a link of my first big motor setup, 2dof-redesigned-big-worm-gear-motor-sim-t3640.html
Frame has since been redesigned but still uses big motors.

    Cheers, David.

that sounds like x-sim 2089, of which someone here may be able to send you a link.
Or you can wait till the new simtools is released.

Hello all. My name is Stephen, a 28yo from Alberta Canada. I have been a racing sim fan for a long time but just recently got the itch for a new autumn project and this looks right up my alley. I am good with electronics and just got my electrical ticket last year, I can build near anything from scratch and have a good eye for scrounging parts. My first project will probably be a 2 or 3dof racing rig with worm gears and am in the process of going through the forums to see what genius ideas are rolling around there.

Looks like an amazingly helpful community and I can't wait to get started.
