    Hi

I've been meaning to do a writeup, the arcade wanted it to be "easier" to drive with more movement so we ended up configuring it like this:

The CHG90 was quite a tricky thing to mount, but it's a really nice display, would highly recommend it.

is that a rack and pinion style actuator instead of a ball screw ?

Sort of, it's a belt drive.

can i find out more about the actuators anywhere - most of the embedded images do not work

Well I've gone through a few iterations. The are essentially all low inertia, serpentine designs. Right now I'm actually busy testing a cable drum and it works really well, not as direct as the belt/track combination but the smoothest actuator design so far, also completely silent. But they all have one big drawback, they are much more expensive than a ballscrew.

So for a lower cost option we'll have some ballscrew options. Maybe even as a DIY actuator kit since I have a pretty robust motion controller and most people probably have the ability to build their sims but not make actuators.

Anyway, I'll make a new thread soon about the new model and explain the drive system.

I’ve also been looking at planetary gear winch motors for a cable drive. Only thing is I need a custom drum size to get the right ratio.

The drum is reasonably simple and your local machine shop should be able to do them for you at a reasonable cost, if you need help on some drawings or to show you how I do it let me know.

The machine shops I've visited don't do anything, "at a reasonable cost" though. I suppose its a matter of your definition of whats reasonable. :D In any case I wouldn't be at all surprised that having a custom drum made would cost more than the cost of the winch itself.

Well I guess it also depends on how you design the part. For a 50mm roller, 36mm long that I'm using, we'd probably charge around $300 if someone walked in and asked us to make only 6 of them. I think on your side it would be the same, ask them to make 100 and the price would come down to about 1/3rd of that.

It’s not about the cost though that is a factor. I’d probably just have a hub machined and build the rest myself somehow. But machine shop costs can be pretty high when you aren’t a regular customer especially if you need keyways and such.

I was just commenting that it’s not generally an off the shelf part. No big deal.

The winch/cable method has some real advantages without adding much moving mass.
