Doubling as an office chair is tempting ;)

For further slight developments I have now ordered a G27 steering wheel as currys/pc world was having a flash sale and seemed like the cheapest priced at 159...or I've paid too much lol

More importantly (whilst I haven't sorted the linkage part out yet) I have collected my motors but :

What do you guys reckon for mounting the arms (and maybe the pots) to, I was kinda expecting the hole to be on the face rather than the side

as a very silly thing but CTC makes sense to me now..

also with these motors, as the mount hole is on the side of the shaft, would it be a bad idea to weld the lever to the face of the shaft to save messing about, which in turn, weld a bolt/metal to the other side for the pot to attach to?

I would be concerned that the heat could make the shaft brittle.

That is true :( i know the keyway is an option although im either searching wrong but cant really seem to find anything or quite expensive, do you think if i did like an L bracket that mounted to those side holes, it should be ok?

I think a correct sized interference fit tube using the hole to bolt through to secure it would be better.

Ah yes i remember seeing yours now (couldnt think at the time), another suggestion i had been given would be to drill and tap down the middle for a bolt..

Do you remember what you used for the tube if its the same motors we have?

I have the exact same motors as you do. I attached the levers with a tube that had a hole to allow for a M8 bolt to go through. The tube was little too big (fractions of mm) and I used aluminium from a beer can to fill the gap.

i stopped by maplins the other week to grab a 10k similar to those to test an issue i had with existing pots.

It worked... but it is very stiff to turn and the post is very fragile, i do not image it would last 5 mints mounted to a motor shaft.

id just order some decent hall effects and have done with it.

if i understand correctly there non contact so you wont break them when calibrating motors either so no need to order 360's
as a safety net and loose resolution.

Your understanding is correct, the Hall Sensors won't break if rotated and they provide excellent resolution, which is why they are great for directly mounting to a shaft, no gearing needed.

And what about 360 deg single continuous turn pots? They are no good?

From reading about mounting the pots to the motor, you wouldn't have the pots directly connected to the shaft but something flexible between the two? ( I could be wrong though?)

    yep a flexible coupler.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f...e+coupler.TRS0&_nkw=flexible+coupler&_sacat=0

you need to drill and tap the shaft to use those on the motors you have though (i have the same motors at the moment also).

Might be easier just to glue the pot to the shaft with araldite or something if you dont have the equipment or bother to tap em. I just bought a £200 drill press to do it :) sure ill need it for other stuff though.

have a look at them in maplins... provding you have a pot similar to the link i posted you will see
how fragile and stiff the maplins onse are in comparison.

Although they are cheap if they brake no great loss apart from some wasted time so maybe give it a go and see...
